Why Is Christmas Important: 9 Things You Should Know about Christmas
by Astro Ved Online Astrology ConsultationChristmas
celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Jesus was the Son of God who
came to redeem humanity. He was born on earth to pay for the sins of humanity.
Christmas is a day of rejoicing, remembrance, and worship, for it marks the day
the Son of God appeared on earth to take away our sins.
The story of
Christ resonates with people of all faiths. God sacrificed his own Son to save
his earthly children, and it speaks volumes of God’s love for his creations. It
is a story that holds great meaning and many valuable lessons for the world.
It’s why Christmas is so important and why people of other faiths, too, love to
celebrate Christmas and be a part of the festivities. The message of Christmas
is enduring and universal. It is a message of peace, love, compassion,
generosity, forgiveness, and unity.
Here are 9 things
that remind us of the timeless appeal and importance of Christmas.
1. Birth
of a Savior
A child was born
two thousand years ago. He was the Son of God. It had been predicted that a
messiah would be born to save humanity.
It was God’s love
for mankind that made him send his beloved Son to earth, knowing what was his
fate. Jesus’s birth was part of God’s plan of redemption. Christmas marks the
beginning of the plan that God set into motion.
“For God so
loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should
not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world
to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
John 3:16-17
2. God
Fulfills His Promise
God’s plan for
redemption was in place since the Fall, 2,000 years before the birth of Christ.
His plan took concrete shape with Abraham.
God makes a
covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12 to make Abraham’s name great. God also
promised that Abraham would be a father to many nations and that he would bless
him.
With Jesus’s
birth, the promise was fulfilled.
Now the Lord
said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house
to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I
will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will
bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you
all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Genesis 12:1-3 ESV
By sending
Abraham’s descendent, Jesus, to earth, he fulfilled his promise that all
nations (Jew or Gentile) would be blessed. They would be blessed by God’s grace
and their sins forgiven.
Abraham’s children
refer not only to biological descendants but also to his descendants in the
faith. He was the father of many nations!
And he
believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Genesis 15:6 ESV
3. Jesus’
Sacrifice
One grasps the
importance of Christmas only when one understands what Jesus came to
accomplish.
Jesus took birth
in order to live a sinless life and lay it down eventually, shouldering the
burden of sin so that the rest of mankind could be saved. The reason for his
birth was the redemption of all mankind.
4.
Christ’s Generosity
Why do people
exchange gifts at Christmas time? It is because of the gift we received from
Christ. He gave us the gift of his own life. One way to honor his gift is to
love others and care for them. Christ’s generosity invites us to be generous
too. By being generous to the less fortunate, we can honor his life.
5. The
Meaning of Christmas
Nowadays,
Christmas has become an excuse for frenetic activity. In the midst of all the
shopping, celebrating, having fun, partying, etc., are you forgetting the
meaning of the celebration? If you get carried away with traditions, you may
forget the meaning of what you are celebrating. So, celebrate mindfully. Don’t
lose sight of what Christmas really means.
6.
Christmas Traditions
Christmas has been
reduced to a consumerist holiday now. It is no longer what it was supposed to
be.
Following
traditions is not a bad thing in itself. It is fine to hang lights, decorate
Christmas trees, watch Christmas movies, sing Christmas songs, bake cakes, and
exchange gifts.
The problem is
that we tend to forget why we are celebrating. Christmas is a time to remember
Jesus. And if we overlook Christ, it isn’t Christmas.
Always remember
that whatever we do during Christmas is because of Christ. All the traditions
have only one aim – to honor Christ.
7. Christmas
Brings Families Together
One of the really
nice things about Christmas is that it brings families together. However,
always remember that it is Christ who brought you together. Even as you connect
with your family, connect with Christ too. Thank him for giving you a loving
family and giving you a reason to spend some happy moments with them.
8. Tell
the Christmas Story
Christmas is a day
to remember God’s gift of his Son. Christ knew what lay in store for him, but
he took on the role gladly. Don’t lose sight of his large-heartedness.
Discuss the
Christmas story with your loved ones. Spend some time in church and reflect on
his life and message, and thank God for his sacrifice.
9. The
Importance of Worship
Make time for
worship. Let it be your goal this Christmas. Turn away from the things of this
world and look heavenwards. Let your focus be Christ, whatever you do this
Christmas. Dedicate your life to worship and praise the one who gifted you the
grace which made you pure.
Because your
steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
So I
will bless you as long as I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.
