Why English Coaching Centres teach role play

by Vandana V. Author

The first idea that pops in our head when we hear role play is acting in certain situations and gazing at the action-reaction of the people involved.

When this is considered an activity by English Coaching Centres to be incorporated to upgrade the speaking skill, it brings joy to many learners.

As observed, English speaking coaching highlights that the English learners hesitate a lot, especially in situations where they must converse in English. Knowing the language is one thing, but fluency is essential.

Thus, role-play gives them the potential to express their opinions or viewpoints clearly, and being in situations helps with fluency and appropriate use of vocabulary.

Speaking allows individuals to build around the conversation with verbal and nonverbal gestures in various events, and this methodology is followed by English Coaching in Bhopal. More than conventional methods, the learner focuses on putting across the messages very carefully and being confident in speaking in general and social gatherings.

In present times where the world has shrunk because of the internet, many people you come across will be speaking in English or aren’t comfortable at all. This kind of barrier not only outcasts them from groups but also makes them feel low on their personality.

The English Coaching Centres include role-play activities to give a direction in behavior and speaking in a certain way, be it greeting, following a telephonic conversation, visiting a mart, buying from high-end shops, etc. One can practice this activity in groups or between two people, but you need a buddy to practice this.

How it works

As adapted by English Coaching Centres, learners are subjected to daily life situations, like going to a grocery store and returning a faulty product. A clear explanation about the case is given, like a conversation between the customer and the manager.

Here the learning point is the usage of appropriate vocabulary for the complaint. You can’t simply say, “I am here to return this product.”

The customer has to give a detailed background as to when did he/she purchase the product, do they have the receipt, when did they realize it was damaged?

And on the other side the manager will have concerns like, does the product fall in the category of returnable or exchange items, he will have to return the money or replace the item, does it fall under the policy of return, and so on.

Such occurrences can motivate learners to understand and screen the situations; the only difference will be that he/she is determined to get into the roles and make the best learning out of it.

English Speaking Coaching mentions the benefits of Role play activity: -

1.      To be creative- portrayal of emotions is an integral part of role play. One can be creative in handling critical situations by not getting argumentative but logical.

2.     Part of various situational interactions- more and more participation will lead to being present for several situations and further learning from any mistakes made while conducting the activity.

3.     Confidence in real-time scenarios – with the help of role play, the learner certainly gains a lot of enthusiasm for real scenes. With better delivery of content, the learner can gain motivation for verbal skills.

4.    Vocabulary enhancement- appropriate vocabulary is the best form of learning from role plays. Not every situation demands a common lexical resource. For example, If you are talking about education, you will be focused on education, schools, subjects, lesson plans, co-education, etc.

5.     Fluency- biggest hurdle for speaking is fluency; thus, one can easily overcome this with role play. Eloquence can be achieved when you practice more similar situations and take them in the direction of connecting to real-life scenarios. For example, if you have learned to book a hotel room for vacation in the role-play activity, we can book the space to experience our speaking abilities.

6.    Open in behavior- few students are shy and don’t want to talk at all or talk as and when required. So, with the role play technique, when the learner is subjected to a given scene, he/she needs to converse to complete the task. This way, they can learn to adapt and open up in their behavior to express their feelings, which further will hone their speaking skill.

7.     Smoothening of rigid levels of learning- many learners also have reservations that they don’t know proper English and will not fulfill the task requirements. But the catch with the role play technique is that the learners can simplify their ways of learning. They can understand its objective and participate in conquering this fear.

Most of the institutes of English Coaching in Bhopal have paved the path of Role play methods, where they find that role play is beneficial to students in improving their speaking skills. Moreover, to keep track of their progress in speaking, they suggest recording the participation and giving the learners motivating feedback.

To summarize the above-cited merits, we find that the role-play approach has improved learners’ speaking skills. It shows that learners’ individual development and progress are possible as ‘communicating, being creative, interactive and encouraging.’
