Engineering is a profession about which people are extremely fascinated and fond of but the current market statistics and scenario is very depressing as far as the Engineering profession is concerned. There was a time when Engineering was at its peak but now it has become saturated. During the past Engineering was considered to be a really difficult field of occupation and only talented and gifted ones were ready to take up the challenge. But things have changed drastically over the time. According to the Market Statistics there are now 3000 Engineering colleges across India which has an intake capacity of 300 students per college per year. As a result almost 50% of the Engineering graduates are unemployed. The rate at which the Engineering colleges have grown is far higher than the growth of job opportunities in India.

Main Underlying Causes of the Problem

The main reason for this is “DEARTH OF RIGHT TALENT”. The toughest challenge is to recruit a right candidate for a right position. The problems that the employers are facing are that the BTECH graduates are lacking in the basic skills and technical knowledge. Though they have acquired a formal degree in Engineering but the basic fundamental and conceptual skills are missing. Companies find it really difficult to invest on training for a fresh BTECH candidate because the basic technical skills that an entry level corporate job demands is lacking in a candidate.  Therefore companies cannot afford to waste so much time and money on a particular candidate. The quality of technical education that the engineering colleges and institutions provide is degrading and not matching with the requirements of the industry. The focus of the students is only on theoretical learning and as a result they are facing tremendous problems in getting a suitable job.

Condition of the Market

The conditions of the students are so pathetic that according to some of the top leading IT & Electronics Companies like Hexaware Technologies, TCS, IBM, Nokia Siemens, SAMSUNG, even if the companies have provided thirty-six months of training, skill gaps and deficiency have been noted. Companies are only concerned with the right technical skill set and they do not bother about the huge no. of BTECH graduates passing every year. There is no shortage of jobs but there are acute shortages of employable, skilled manpower for Entry level jobs in IT and Electronics Sector.

What is the solution to the problem?

The main solution to the problem is to develop the skills and technical knowledge of the candidate. The candidate should go through proper training programs in IT and Electronics field to improve their technical skills and fill up the deficits for entry level corporate jobs. The best time to clear the fundamentals and basics is the time when the candidate is studying the Engineering course. The different short term training programs will help them to clear up the basics and thus the technical competency will also improve. These training programs are beneficial during the 1st or 2nd or 3rd year of the Engineering course. On the other hand for the final year students it is suggested that they should go for 6 months Industrial Internship programs for enhancing their technical knowledge and skills. The main motto for the Internship program is to make the fresh BTECH graduate aware about the working environment of a corporate firm. But according to the current market scenario it is suggested for the students that instead of 45 days of internship or Summer Training they are advised to go for 6 months Industrial Training. The benefits for this training program will be

·        They will gain a lot more practical output

·        Guidance of the industry experienced professional experts.

·        Will be working under the live industrial projects

·        Will get introduced with the corporate atmosphere for a longer span of time

·        Wholesome personality development and change in attitude

·        Improve their Adaptability making them “SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST” by getting exposed to the constrains and complexities of a corporate atmosphere.

All these ingredients incorporated together will boost confidence level in an individual, improve his skills and thus will make it a little easier to compete and survive at the entry level corporate jobs.
