Have we ever spared a thought for the amount of water we consume at home and at the workplace on a daily basis? Are we aware of the amount of water that goes down the drain every time we flush the toilet? Taking a bath is a healthy habit but do we ever realize how much water, many a time, potable water, we waste while staying under the shower for hours on end?

A common toilet usually consumes six gallons of water at each flush. That is just one flush we are talking about. Imagine the number of times that a person uses the toilet daily. That amounts to around thirty gallons of water wasted by each person on a regular basis. We cannot imagine the figure on an annual basis, and that’s when India is battling sanitation issues. Think of the amount of water Indians would need if every household in India had proper toilets. With the number of people in the country, the earth would run dry if such a feat were to be accomplished in future.

So, what do we do? Should we make efforts to provide toilets in every village and slum? Yes, we should. We should do it because healthy sanitation facility is a right of every citizen of India. We should work for it because it is one of the reasons for poverty and deaths in India. It should be done because it is a basic human need. But how should we look after the needs of the people when we may squeeze out the last drop of water from the earth in the process?

The answer to this is eco-toilets in India. As a developing country, India is dealing with many issues and sanitation is one of them and a major one at that. With few resources and fewer ways of conserving them, eco-toilets are the need of the hour. Eco toilets are a great option for not only India but every country around the world that is trying to conserve the diminishing water resources.

While there are varieties of eco-friendly toilets in the market, two of the most popular ones are dual flush toilets and composting toilets. In the dual flush toilet, water is utilized in two ways- lesser amount (around 0.79 gallons) for non-solid waste and a little more (around 1.6 gallons) for solid waste. It comes with two kinds of flush for the purpose. This is a good way of conserving water as the amount of water that is consumed is far less than the six gallons that are wasted at each flush. It is no different from a common toilet in style and looks so there is hardly any issue in installing it at home or in public restrooms.

Composting toilet is the most eco-friendly toilet till now as it uses little to no water to flush the waste. Composting toilet works using an aerobic processing system to treat human waste and requires ventilation for the release of fumes. It uses slow, cold composting conditions to treat the waste. It is a great option for India as it can be installed anywhere where there is lack of a proper sewage system. It is very easy to maintain and is very efficient.

Though eco-toilets are somewhat expensive, it is a small price to pay when compared to the priceless natural resources that will be conserved. Water is essential for human survival and nothing can be more expensive or important than saving it for the present and future generations to come.
