Why are preschools important for toddlers?

by James Marellene Content Writer
Next to early learning centres, preschools are one of the most important steps in a child’s life. It provides a solid foundation for their education and development further on in life. Parents, understandably, take great care and consideration when making their child’s preschool selection. However, it doesn’t stop many from wondering, “Why is preschool important for my toddler?” It’s a fair question, after all, children are between the ages of three and six years old, so how much can they possibly learn at preschool? At preschool, your child can learn a lot more than basic mathematics. In fact, your child can improve their social, emotional and cognitive development just from being in preschool!

What do they learn at preschool?

This will depend on the country and state that you are in however, many of the foundations stay the same. At preschool Sydney, your child will most likely learn the following.

  • Communication and social skills (through interaction with other children and adults)
  • Physical and fine motor skills (through drawing, colouring and cutting with scissors)
  • Responsibility, independence and self-worth (through being on their own in preschool and looking after their own belongings)
  • Problem-solving and creative thinking skills (through storytelling and dramatic play)

Why are preschools important?

Now that we understand some of what children learn at preschools, it is easy to see how it will be beneficial for them in the future. However, there are more complex reasons as to why and how preschools can help children in the future.

Helps them learn both socially and academically

Preschool will allow your child to grow both socially and academically by engaging in educational games and activities with other children. In addition to learning problem-solving and critical thinking skills, both essential for academics, they will also learn how to play with children. This is a key skill for toddlers to learn as it helps them to form friendships at preschool and later on in life. Additionally, while not strictly academic, educational games and activities lay the foundation for better learning at more advanced levels.

Eases them into structured learning

In pre-school, children will have to learn how to sit quietly, listen to their teacher, raise their hand to ask or answer a question (opposed to simply blurting it out), take turns, share the teacher’s attention and follow instructions. This is very different from what they are used to at daycare and will help them ease into the structured learning of school later on.

Develop them socially and emotionally

Preschool is the perfect place for your child to practise manners, learn how to interact with children their age as well as adults and build confidence. It will also allow them to explore their own independence as this will be one of the first times they are on their own for an extended period of time. Small tasks such as eating on their own or pouring their own glass of juice will help to develop them emotionally.

Nurture their inquisitiveness

At a preschool age (3 to 6 years old), children usually have a lot of questions. As a parent, though you would like to, it can be very hard to answer every single question that your child has (sometimes, you may not even know the answer). Preschool has teachers who are trained to deal with this inquisitiveness and nurture it into a love of education and learning.

Learn basics

Basic counting, words and manners will be taught at the preschool level. Many centres create an educational environment for your child. This allows them to not only have a solid foundation of the basics but to also be one step ahead for ‘big school’.

We hope that this article helps you make a decision that’s best for you and your child. Remember that preschools play an important role in the emotional, cognitive and social development of your child, so, it is important that you select one that your child loves and that treats them like family. Preschools will only help your child and nurture their development in every aspect, so do their future a favour and enrol them into preschool.
