Why a Doctor Recommend Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

The ability to become pregnant of a couple's depends on many different circumstances and factors. The IUI procedure can be used for the treatment of many kinds of fertility problems. If infertility is associated with male, the reasons can be arising often when sperm aren't strong enough to swim through the cervix and up into the fallopian tubes for further fertilization or there is a very low sperm count. When the issue is associated with female infertility, it can be arising if a female has a condition called endometriosis or suffered with anything that is not normal in her reproductive organs. Doctors may often suggest artificial insemination when they are not able to identify the exact reasons that cause infertility in a couple.

There are numerous reasons why a doctor would recommend an IUI, for example:

Pregnancy with donor sperm: IUI is most suitable and safe procedure used to achieve pregnancy for women who need to use donor sperm to get pregnant. Good quality frozen sperm donor samples are obtained from certified labs and thawed before the further IUI procedure.

Unexplained infertility: IUI is often recommended as a first treatment against unexplained infertility along with ovulation-inducing medications.

Less expensive: IUI is rather less expensive and invasive option compared if we compare it with in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Endometriosis-related infertility: For the treatment of infertility caused due to endometriosis, your doctor may recommend to follow medications in order to obtain a good quality egg along with initiating IUI process. Basically, it is often the first treatment approach against infertility related to Endometriosis.

Male associated infertility or sub-fertility: The male partner's semen analysis is one of the first steps in the medical assessment to identify the root cause which resulted infertility. The semen may show weak movement of sperm, abnormalities in sperm size which is less than adequate (morphology) and below-average sperm concentration, which required to be treated first. IUI can eliminate some of these mentioned problems because preparing sperm for the Intrauterine Insemination procedure helps to separate normal and highly motile sperm from those of lower quality.

Cervical related infertility:  The cervix located at the lower end of the uterus provides the opening between your vagina and uterus. Around the time of ovulation mucus produced by the cervix provides an ideal and favorable environment for sperm to travel from your vagina to the fallopian tubes. If your cervical mucus is too thick, it may hinder the sperms’ ability to enter the uterus. IUI will allow the sperm to bypass the mucus and allow the cervix depositing sperm directly into your uterus and increasing the count of sperm available to meet the awaiting egg to initiate further fertilization.

Semen allergy: Few women may show allergy to proteins in her partner's semen. In such condition ejaculation of semen into the vagina causes burning, swelling or redness where the semen contacts the vaginal skin. A condom can help to overcome this problem but at the same time it also prevents pregnancy. IUI can be effective if sensitivity is severe, since many of the semen proteins are removed before the sperm is inserted in to the vagina.

Flexible pregnancy: A single woman or same gender couple may conceive a child by using sperm from donor.
