Who is entitled to join Royal Arch Masonry?

What is Royal Arch?

Royal Arch is an Order in Freemasonry that is more or less linked to Craft Masonry. The evidence of its origin is from Ireland in the year 1743 and it seems that it was added extra within the Craft Lodges in Ireland, England and Scotland for many years. Therefore, it was referred as a fourth Degree in Freemasonry by the Antients in England. Also, it seems that the Moderns never officially recognized this Degree at all which led to the entirely different Royal Arch Chapters. Later on, these differences were partially resolved by the Union of the Grand Lodges in the year 1813. With a mutual compromise, it was considered as an official and accepted part of the ‘Pure and Antient Freemasonry’ by the new United Grand Lodge of England.

It leads its members to a fascinating journey of self-knowledge and self-discovery. It provides practical lessons about the entire “pure ancient masonry” values and principles. The journey starts with the Entered Apprentice degree to the First Principal’s chair of the Chapter. The main principles that Royal Arch follows are the belief in the Brotherhood of Men, the Fatherhood of God, and the Immortality of the Human Soul. This Masonry also teaches self-respect and self-restraint.

How to join Royal Arch Freemasonry?

Once a Mason has attained the rank of a Master Mason in a period of four weeks standing, he is then entitled to join the Royal Arch Chapter in order to complete his Master Mason’s degree. The Master Mason is then known as a Companion. Chapters have a number of officers with specific titles, most important being the three Principals that rule the Chapter for one year. Every year, an installation meeting is conducted in which the new team of officers is appointed.

Royal Arch Chapters meet independently in the Lodges and their ritual is an allegory. In this way the Companions are able to focus their minds without having any conflicts in their religious beliefs and their relationship with their God. There are four ceremonies that are held in the Royal Arch Freemasonry. First being the exaltation ceremony that is held to bring in the new members and the other three are installation ceremonies that are held for the appointment of the three Principals of the Chapters.

The exaltation ceremony has two parts including a dramatic presentation of the principles of the Order followed by the three lectures. In these lectures, the history, principles and the significance of the Royal Arch are explained in detail.

Royal Arch Regalia

Royal Arch regalia are different from that of Craft Masonry. It comprises of a Royal Arch Grand Chapter Apron that has a red and blue surround, a sash in red and blue color and a special jewel. Royal Arch Masons should wear these regalia to Craft Lodges to show the bond that lies between the Royal Arch and Craft Masonry.
