Which Dumpster Size Is Best For You?

by George Ellis Marketing Manager

The right dumpster size will prevent you from spending unnecessary money, and make the dumping process easier for you.

But how will you determine the right dumpster size?

The trial and error method is too expensive. And limiting your renting budget unnecessarily will hamper your dumping process.

Here are a few methods to determine the right dumpster size:

1. Waste Type

Different types of wastes weigh differently. Thus, decide the dumpster size based on the waste type.

If the waste is wet or semi-wet, the required area will be less. Thus, more weight can be stuffed into less area. On the contrary, for spongy material, the required area will be more, but the weight will be much less.

Apart from some minor restrictions due to safety and local regulations, you might not be allowed to put a few types of wastes in the dumpster.

Hence, get it cleared from the dumpster rental provider if the particular waste is accepted in your area or not.

2. Waste Size

Now, this is the most important part. The size of a dumpster is measured typically in feet while its volume is measured in yards.

Here are a few examples to make things clear:

A. 10-yard dumpster

A 10-yard dumpster has a maximum capacity of 2 tonnes. These are best suitable for at-home projects, including one car garage clean-outs, bathroom remodeling, spring cleaning and basement clean-outs.

Being equivalent to 3 to 4 pick up truck loads, they are most suitable for a small kitchen or a bathroom remodeling job.

B. 20-yard dumpster

A 20-yard dumpster holds 20 cubic yards of waste. It is best suited for basement, attic, or garage cleanup. Also, flooring and carpet removal for a large house is easily possible with this size.

It is generally adequate for most commercial and residential projects. This size will serve you well in the vast majority of moderate construction/demolition, home renovations, landscaping, and recycling projects.

C. 30-yard dumpster

The 30-yard dumpster should be used for large commercial projects as they have a maximum capacity of 5 tonnes.

The huge dimension of 6ft x 8ft x 18ft can be used for a new home and commercial construction debris or commercial/home renovation debris.

Having the capacity of 12 pickup truck loads, a 30-yard dumpster should only be used if the project is really big. Otherwise, you won’t make full use of it.

3. Location

A 10-yard container is 12 feet long, while a 20-yard container is 22 feet long. There is a minimal distinction in width.

Considering this, if the place of delivery is narrow, such as a small street or alley, be sure to compare the square footage of available space to the dimensions of the dumpster including the truck cab.  Ensure that no overhead wires or obstructions exist.
