by Philip Smith Inbound Marketing Manager

There are many online and offline stores that put ceramic and porcelain tiles in the same section, saying that they are same material from different brands. However, when you take a deep dive into the technicalities, ceramic and porcelain tiles appear different materials.

The basic difference between ceramic tile and porcelain tile is – the dough they are made from. Ceramic tiles are made from naturally-found smooth clay dough, while porcelain tiles are made from denser clay dough with fine sand and other additives added to the dough.

Additionally, ceramic tiles are fired twice – first to remove the water content from the tile and second time, to give it the desired design. Likewise, porcelain tiles are dust pressed and fired at even higher temperatures.

When to Choose Ceramic?

Both the types of tiles represent quite similar characteristics due to their main component – clay. However, under certain circumstances, you should choose ceramic tiles over porcelain tiles. Such as –

Tight Budget –

Ceramic tiles are cheaper than porcelain tiles. So, if you have a small budget to finish your project. This is because, it makes a suitable choice for almost any indoor project, and you can use it in your home without worrying about performance issues.

Ease of Installation –

When you have a large project to finish and you have a shorter amount of time, then you should pick ceramic over porcelain. Why? Because ceramic tiles are less dense than porcelain tiles, and they are easy to cut, carry, and install. It takes less time to finish your project with ceramic tiles than with porcelain tiles.

Low Traffic Floor –
