Can I Use Marble Pencil Molding around Fireplace?

Pencil molding is a tile product that you typically use to decorate your walls and other vertical features in your home. It is rounded on one side like pencil, and flat on the other.

Marble molding is made from marble, however, pencils can be available in many other materials including natural stones and porcelain. You can use them on walls to create a border or frame. You could also install them to separate a section on your wall or highlight something on your wall.

  • Measure the area on the fireplace surround, where you want to install pencil tiles. Buy pencil molding tiles after determining this.
  • Dry install the tiles on floor or ground to discover the right laying pattern. Cut the pencils as needed beforehand.
  • Apply white thin set mortar on the backing of pencil tiles. You will need a margin trowel to this smoothly. Ensure that the amount of mortar is adequate, like it should cover the bck of pencil tile completely and does not ooze out, at the same time, when pressed on the fireplace surround.
  • Press and apply the pencil molding on the fireplace surround as per your design idea. Hold it for a while before releasing the pressure.
  • Let the pencil molding tiles be there for about a day or two.
  • They do not require grouting. If you want, you can use unsanded grout. Wipe off excess grout within ten minutes.
