When is the right time to replace a boiler?

by Pro Star Mechanical Services Mechanical Services

If your boiler is losing out on its functionality, you have some really important decisions to make. Is repairing a better alternative or is a replacement more practical? Boilers are an essential component of any household and commercial establishment as they keep the place warm and comfortable to live and to work in. That being said, when your boiler is not coming up to scratch to run correctly or leaks, there are some things you can consider.

Bear in mind, only professional mechanical services will be able to handle the repair and replacement efficiently. They will also be able to assist you with water treatment repair, storage tank replacement, commercial air conditioning maintenance, etc.

First of all, see if there is any water running out of the boiler. If there is, then it is most likely only a control issue. A stop leak liquid can be placed into the unit as a short-term fix for the problem. Take into consideration the fact that this fix is only temporary and will not last you long. For a permanent fix, you may need to change either a section of the boiler or the entire unit may have to be replaced.

If your boiler unit is relatively new and the warranty is likely to cover the cost of replacement, then undoubtedly go for it. Bear in mind though, that the warranty will not provide for the labor cost. On top of that, if the unit is more than 20 years old then it is a no-brainer, replace it. It will not be as efficient as newer units and the warranty has most likely relapsed on it too. Even if your old boiler is in an excellent shape and works sufficiently, it is no match for the energy efficient boilers of today.

The next source of trouble could be a breakdown of the controls on the boiler. Unless the control that broke down is reasonably priced, it is best to simply replace the entire unit. In many cases, when one control runs aground, other controls are soon to follow and the boiler is transformed into a money pit.

Questions concerned with boiler failure  and replacement are many. This should give a quick rundown of the choices that are at your disposal. There are quite a few variables and in many instances, no answer is the 100% right. Many things hinge on the age of the boiler, the cost of the servicing, and the economy of the existing unit as argued against the economy of a new boiler.
