History of Father’s Day

We all know that Mother’s Day is a widely celebrated event across the globe and it was declared as a national holiday in 1914. The celebration of Mothers laid the path for the celebration of Fathers too. The history of Father’s Day dates back to 1908 when a church in West Virginia held a sermon to pay tribute to 362 men who were killed the year before in a coal mining explosion. This was the first ever event to celebrate and honor fathers.

In the following year, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd started her mission to declare Father’s Day as a national holiday. She was one of the six children raised by their single father. Hence, she thought fathers should be honored in the same way as mothers. After a year of her petition, her home state of Washington celebrated its first official Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. Over the years, the celebration of Father’s Day began in all the states of USA. After a long struggle, Father’s Day was finally declared a national holiday in 1972 and President Richard Nixon signed it as a law.

After around 60 years of the birth of the idea to celebrate Father’s Day, it was declared as a federal holiday. However, there were many events to threaten the holidays celebrating or honoring parents during that period. There was a national movement during the 1920s and 1930s to banish both Mother’s and Father’s Day and replace them with a single Parent’s Day. Significant events like The Great Depression and World War II helped advance the idea of Father’s Day. During the war, Father’s Day became a means to honor the many fathers who were serving overseas. Then by the time President Nixon signed the declaration making Father’s Day a public holiday, it had already emerged into a national institution.
