Varanasi, banaras, or kashi has a long long history to it. However, every tourist destination has a cycle just like a product does. What is it, then that makes Varanasi a place that has remained a popular destination among locals and foreigners both?

Considered to be the abode of lord Shiva and Parvati, the origins of varanasi are unknown but is known to be the land of salvation and freedom from the birth and rebirth cycle. Varanasi is considered to be a very holy site because according to legends, Brahma’s fifth head is said to have been disappeared here. There was a war between the two supreme gods- Brahma and Shiva. Shiva tore off the fifth head and let it hand from his hand. This sign of major disrespect and shame was finally done over with when the hanging head dropped onto the ground and disappeared into the ground.

Along with that, the Pandavas are said to have visited the city in search of Shiva in order to atone for their sin of killing their own blood and Brahma Hatya that they were forced to commit in the Kurukshetra War. Varanasi is considered as one of the seven holy cities- the Sapta Puri- which promise to provide Moksha. These cities are Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Kashi i.e. Varanasi, Avanti, Kanchi, and Dwarka.

It was only later that varanasi started becoming an important industrial centre where it was said to sell the best quality muslin, silk, perfume, sculpture, ivory works, etc. Later on, as time passed, Varanasi became a part of the kingdom of Kosala where he gave his first sermon, thus setting in motion the wheel of dharma.

Hiuen Tsiang attested to the city being a centre of religious and artistic activities that extended into the rural areas too. It was in the fifteenth century that kabir, an Indian mystic poet and saint lived here and remains the centre of activity for intellectuals even in the middle ages.

Even today, Varanasi remains a holy place mostly for hindus because of how important it is to them. Hindus strive to spend their last moments in the city in order to be cremated on the banks of the river ganges in the land of Varanasi.

This place is so colourful, mesmerising, and rich with history that you cannot miss out on this place and must include it in packages like Golden Triangle with Varanasi. Because of its proximity to the agra, a vital part of the golden triangle, it is easy to see why Varanasi should be a must-go-to place for you.
