People from many countries visit India for volunteering work, as the groups arranging the program are very efficient and arrange flawless volunteering. You can join in groups as well as alone.

A few points about volunteering in India –

• First you have to select what kind of work you want to do. You can choose from helping the underprivileged children by teaching them English, computers or anything else that you know. You can help the underprivileged women by empowering them by teaching a little to find jobs for themselves. You can work at an orphanage. You can join the group to work for the street children too. Thus you can choose from a wide variety of programs that are conducted.

• You have to choose the location which suits you. India is a widespread country and therefore programs are conducted in many different places. You have to choose which area you want to go as you will be spending a lot of time there.

• You have to think out which group you want to join and which programs they are conducting and at what time of the year. You have to look for the dates of commencement of the program too.

• The time period you want to join for should also be thought of, as the minimum time to join is fifteen days and the maximum is of six months. As two weeks is a very short period to get to know the people, people usually take up at least a month long time to volunteer in India.

• Cost of volunteering is also a factor to be thought of, as it has to be paid by you yourself. This will include the cost of your food, accommodation, your excursions etc.

A few facts to remember –

• To volunteer India, you also have to remember the weather of the place you will be going to work in. It may not be pleasant all the time, as summers in some parts of India are quite hot and you may also witness electricity cuts.

• Although safety concerns are looked after well and guards are also available, but in some places mosquitoes play havoc. So it’s better to carry mosquito repellent with you.

• You also need to carry proper Indian dresses, so that you can be almost one with the community you will work in.

• You should also know a little bit about the language spoken there and the culture that is followed. Going through a few tips before embarking on the volunteering work in India will certainly help you in your mission.
