What Types Of Accreditation And Licenses Are Required For Home Care Services

by Anna Rose Blogger

If you are considering caring for an elderly family member or friend, you should think about obtaining the necessary licenses to provide personal care. Personal care services may include housekeeping, companionship, bathing, medical assistance and transportation. There are three (3) types of licensing boards in Pennsylvania; they are the Department of Health, the Department of Human Services, and the Department of Public Safety and Security. It is important to obtain and start a home care business in Pennsylvania for these different types of services to ensure that you are providing the best care possible to your loved one.

What Types Of Accreditation And Licenses Are Required For Home Care Services

The first three licensing boards can be quite confusing; the Department of Health is the department that regulates the various health departments within the state such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). All Home Health Care Service providers must meet the requirements and have been through training provided by the FDA, including the national certification standards for home health care services. Some services may also need to register with the DHHS before offering services, including long-term care services. Long-term care services can be either custodial or non-custodial.

The second type of license that you need is the Department of Human Services. This department manages social services and the Department of Public Safety and Security. Most people think of home health care services as being for people that are elderly or disabled. However, this is not always the case, as receiving care from home health care services may also involve people who are in good health and simply do not want to stay in a nursing home. Some of these services may also include adult daycares and adult daycare, and/or services that require the person to be in a group home setting.

The third type of license you will need to receive to provide home health care services is a license from the Department of Social Services to provide personal care services. The most common personal care services required by DSS are bathing, feeding, laundry and exercising, but these services are often required for many other individuals as well. CNA's and ESL will most likely not need this license, however, as they are primarily participating in a program or being trained on-the-job. Training and programs in personal care usually last only a few days or a few weeks. If your employer does not require you to have a DSS license, it may be wise to participate in one or consider signing up for an apprenticeship program that would allow you to get the necessary experience.

The final license required to provide home health care services is from the Department of Social Services' Office of Vocational and Adult Development. This license is required if you are working in a licensed facility that provides long-term care, private pay or both, or if you are receiving care through a private pay agency. The license you obtain from DSDS may be temporary or permanent. Temporary licenses are good for a specific time period, while permanent licenses are valid throughout your employment and for the life of the person receiving care.

Although these licenses are not required, it may be beneficial to have them. As with all health care professions, there are always laws and regulations changing regarding personal care services, as well as private duty nursing care (mentor care), home health aides and other employment opportunities. By becoming licensed to work in any of these fields, you will be a better representative for yourself, your employer and your community.
