There are many types of bikes available in the market and online and it can be a headache to choose between each one of them if do not have any prior biking or bike buying experience. Some of the common types and their features can be assessed from the following list;

Road Bikes:

These types of bikes are designed solely for the purpose of riding on the paved paths and smooth roads. These are quite light weight and can work also if you need to take part in a racing competition. They have smooth tires and drop handles and can be expensive in many cases. If you try to use them on unpaved paths, they might be a bit uncomfortable and rough to ride on.

Mountain bikes:

The maximum variety is present in mountain bikes since they are in huge demand and are designed for riding on hilly areas such as cities like Sheffield, UK etc. They normally have suspension and shock absorbers giving full grip to the bike and can be heavier than road bikes but you can find them at lesser prices compared to road bikes. They have straight or upright handles and the ones which have a suspension on front are called hard rails, those with suspension on both front and rear sides are known as full suspension bikes and those having no suspension at all are called rigid mountain bikes. These can be learnt efficiently by practice and not by haste.

Hybrid Bikes:

These bikes were originally launched to combine the advantages of both road and mountain bikes as they have wide padded seats and upright handles to allow a comfortable sitting position and can be used on both paved and unpaved trails. However, they cannot offer the complete advantages of a mountain bike as the ability to run smoothly on irregular mountain trails. Hybrid bikes also have variety available and are lightweight as that of road bikes.

Cyclocross bikes:

These types of bikes are specially designed to help run smoothly on a number of road related surfaces such as unpaved paths, gravel and grass. Their handles drop down like road bikes but their wheels are wider to allow enough stability for the paths other than the road. These are quite popular because of their durability and ability to run on many paths and sometimes called as cross bikes in short.
