What to Look for When Buying a New Handbag/Purse

Purchasing a new handbag is not a casual act. It requires a true assessment of the handbag wearer's toting habits and the right fit for the occasion. The handbag is often thought of as the prime accessory for any outfit. Here are some things to consider making sure your final choice is the right choice.

Choose a Color and Size

Purse habits are wildly diverse. Some women like large bags that will allow them to toss in everything except the kitchen sink, and some only want the small pouch or clutch. Some like hands that will allow them to carry their purses at their sides; others prefer elaborate shoulder straps. You should know before the shopping spree begins what size and style will be most comfortable for you. Also, if it is a purse for a special occasion, know the color family that is on your shopping list. This narrows your choices and keeps you from wasting time.

Watch Out for Knock-offs

If your budget allows for a designer bag, you should make sure you are getting the real thing. There are tons of discount outlets, boutiques, consignment shops and street vendors who sell handbags that look so close to the authentic design it is tough to tell it is a fake.

Knock-offs are illegal and could send both sellers and buyers to jail. Most of the time, the genuine design is sold only in the designer's stores and outlets. Resellers do not usually have the authority to sell you the real thing and make their money on volume discounts. Authentic designer handbags cost several times what you might pay for a knock-off.

There are a few tips to help you decide if the designer handbag you want to buy is real. The hardware on the purse should be solid and heavy, not hollow. Check the lining inside the purse. Counterfeiters can copy the exterior design features but do not come close on the lining. They are working from photographs and sometimes miss the mark on some of the distinguishing details. Check the design against photos of the real thing. Sometimes pockets and zippers not designed for the authentic purse appear on the knock-offs. Also, check the spellings of designer names on the purse. Knock-offs often misspell designer names and purse descriptions.

Shop for Function

Always be mindful of the reason you are buying a purse in the first place. Function truly matters. For family vacations or outings with the kids, you may need a large hobo bag, satchel or flap bag. For the small intimate first dinner date, clutches and baguettes might be more functional. Allow the occasion to drive your purchase.
