What To Expect During Fertility Treatment

by Joanne P. Health Enthusiast
IVF treatment is not the easiest thing to go through, and it is important for couples considering the treatment to know what to expect during the process so that they can prepare themselves physically and emotionally. Aside from consulting with the most reliable in vitro fertilization clinic in Davao, it helps to look into how IVF is going to affect you throughout the process.

Evaluation

Before anything else, specialists will check the physical state of both parents individually to see if there are any physical obstructions within their reproductive systems. This could be things such as a blockage within the male’s ejaculatory path — which may keep sperm from traveling outside the testes — or obstructions such as fibroids that make it difficult for embryos to be implanted into the uterus.

Both partners will also be evaluated as to their lifestyle and habits to check if they’re doing anything that might make conception more difficult to achieve. Matters such as unhealthy eating habits, smoking, and exposure to toxins are known to affect both the menstrual cycle and sperm quality and motility.

Medication

Once both partners have been checked and clear for treatment, female patients are typically given medicine to induce more intense ovulation so that as many eggs as possible can be harvested. Note that does not affect the quality of the woman’s eggs, only the quantity.

Men, on the other hand, are not usually given medication to prepare for the acquisition of a semen sample.

Procedures

All female IVF patients will have to go through egg harvesting during which the healthiest eggs from their ovaries are selected and extracted via a suction-ready needle. Male patients, on the other hand, typically do not need to go through a procedure to acquire the needed semen sample. In the case that the male has a  low sperm count, whether it’s due to a blockage or a previous medical treatment, testicular sperm extraction shall be done.

When both the egg and sperm are ready, they shall be combined, allowing fertilization to occur, after which the resulting embryo will be left to develop and grow for a few days. It will then be transplanted into the female’s uterus.

What happens after?

Once an embryo has successfully settled itself into the female’s uterus, the mother is advised to rest and she can return to regular visits with her obstetrician. If the parents wish, they can also have their egg or sperm frozen and kept in storage for future use. They can also choose to have more than one egg fertilized and have those embryos frozen and kept in storage, too.
