What To Do When You Get Roku Error Code 009

by Etc Expo Owner

It’s been a few weeks since you started using your new Roku, and you haven’t had any issues. All of a sudden, you get the dreaded 009 error code on your screen. You try rebooting your device, but that doesn’t help at all. What do you do now? Here are some steps to take to remedy this issue!

1) Try turning off your TV.

Some users find that unplugging their TV and then plugging it back in again after a few minutes helps fix an issue with Roku error code 009. This doesn’t work for everyone, but you may as well try before resetting your device and downloading a fresh copy of the software. If you’re using a streaming box like a Roku or Apple TV, we recommend unplugging it from power and Ethernet and letting it sit for 30 seconds to one minute before turning it back on. This will ensure that both your TV signal and wireless connection are operating properly when you reconnect to your home network.

2) Try plugging directly into your TV.

The most common cause of error code 009 is a loss of connectivity with your TV. Try bypassing your router and plugging directly into your TV with an HDMI cable (you can use one from an old set-top box or even buy a new one on Amazon if you don't have another lying around). Some routers might block MHL, so unplug it and try again. This works in most cases and, if not, it will give you a clear idea of whether there’s something wrong with your Wi-Fi connection. Be sure to restart your Roku if you do connect via HDMI.

3) Reboot your modem.

If you’re having trouble getting online, try unplugging your modem and power-cycling it. Simply disconnecting and reconnecting your modem may fix whatever issues are causing you problems. (Tip: Wait five minutes before plugging in your modem after it’s been unplugged.) If that doesn’t work, try resetting your modem. Consult your provider for detailed instructions on how to do so; but in most cases, you can simply hold down a button (or enter a code) for 30 seconds or so to reboot your device. If neither of these steps works, check with your internet service provider; sometimes they provide free troubleshooting over the phone or through an online chat system.

4) Reboot your router.

While a reboot of your device will rarely fix a problem, it’s a good place to start. If you have time on your hands, try unplugging your Roku for 15 seconds before plugging it back in. Unplugging it for longer isn’t going to hurt anything—you just want enough time for it to fully restart itself. If you get error code 009 while streaming video content, turn off Wi-Fi while streaming.: Depending on what kind of connection you have at home, wireless signals could be interfering with your signal. This can be remedied by turning off Wi-Fi while watching live or recorded shows on channels that require a subscription.

5) Reboot your Roku device by unplugging it for 15 seconds.

If you’re not using your Roku for a few days, it can sometimes get into a weird state and cause problems when you try to connect. Rebooting it is an easy way to resolve these kinds of issues. It’s also worth rebooting if you see any odd behavior from your device (e.g., if your remote stops working). Simply unplug your device for 15 seconds and then plug it back in. If you want to reboot faster, go into Settings > System > Power and choose Power off before unplugging. Once that's done, just follow the on-screen prompts to set up your device again from scratch.
