What to Avoid after Bone Graft Surgery?

by Justin Langer Content Manager

Your jawbone may atrophy or shrink if you've lost a tooth or numerous teeth. If this occurs, placing dental implants may become difficult unless a bone tissue is transferred into the mouth to stimulate the growth of new bone. Bone grafting is the process of creating new bone to support a dental implant.

Even though bone grafting is a common surgical technique, there are still certain dangers involved. You must be aware of the Don'ts while recovering from a bone transplant procedure. Also, you may learn from this page to get perfect information.

Don'ts after a bone transplant procedure

Following a bone transplant procedure, the following should be avoided:

1. Steer clear of rigorous activity and exercise:

For a few days after surgery, you should refrain from intense activity until your dentist gives the all-clear. You should use this period to heal.

2. Avoid consuming hot meals and beverages:

Hot meals and drinks shouldn't be consumed until the numbness in your mouth has subsided. You risk burning your mouth if you consume hot food or drink while your mouth is still numb.

3. Skip the firm, crunchy foods:

For at least 6 to 8 weeks after surgery, or until your dentist gives the all-clear, you should refrain from chewing on items that are hard or crunchy in the region of your mouth where the operation was conducted.

4.Delay using the toothbrush and floss for a while:

Although brushing twice a day and flossing once a day are recommended, you shouldn't start until your dentist gives the all-clear. This is due to the fact that your mouth has to be treated gently in order to promote good healing.

5. Quit smoking:

Continue to abstain from smoking as long as you can. Smoking should be avoided the day of and the day after your bone grafting procedure. This is due to the fact that smoking not only hinders the healing of your incision but also raises the risk of developing dry sockets, a painful oral surgical complication brought on by the sucking action of smoking.

6. Refuse alcohol:

Alcohol should be avoided for at least 24 hours after bone grafting surgery. This is due to the fact that drinking alcohol interferes with any painkillers or antibiotics your dentist may have recommended for you, which makes it harder for your wound to heal.

7. Don't agitate the afflicted area:

You shouldn't use your tongue or fingers to touch the wound after having bone transplant surgery. This is so that the grafted material won't move since the wound is still highly sensitive and might be disturbed. It is extremely risky to touch your wound with your fingers since it might spread infection. The sutures may break if the wound is disturbed, which would halt the healing process.

Even though bone grafting is now a fairly common treatment, choose the correct dentist for your bone grafting surgery is crucial. We are masters in bone grafting at Harbour Pointe Oral Maxillofacial & Advanced Implant Surgery. Depending on what each patient requires, we have a range of bone transplant specialties.
