What This Month’s Major Smoking Law Changes Will Mean For You

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

If – like pretty much everyone else – you’ve been preoccupied lately with the effects on your life of the coronavirus pandemic, you might understandably have overlooked or forgotten about some very significant new legislation on smoking that comes into effect this month.

Yep – we’re talking about the ban from UK shops of menthol cigarettes, rolling tobacco and skinny cigarettes, applicable from 20th May.

The ban arises from new EU Tobacco Product Directive laws, but you might be a little confused about what exactly it will mean for you. So, here’s a quick refresher.

The essentials of the new legislation

A spokesperson for the health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) was quoted by the MyLondon website as saying that the ban prevented any person from producing or supplying a cigarette or hand rolling tobacco with:

“(a) a filter, paper, package, capsule or other component containing flavourings;

“(b) a filter, paper or capsule containing tobacco or nicotine; or

“(c) a technical feature allowing the consumer to modify the smell, taste, or smoke intensity of the product.”

The new laws effectively render it illegal to make or supply any cigarette or tobacco in the UK with a flavouring, such as vanilla or menthol, added.

Included in the ban are ‘click’ cigarettes that enable the flavour to be changed from normal to menthol with a button inside the filter.

According to Amanda Sandford of ASH, “there is evidence that menthol cigarettes relax the airways and the flavour masks the harshness of [cigarette] smoke, therefore younger people find it easier to smoke.

“However, it is an absolute myth that menthol cigarettes are better for you.

“All cigarettes are harmful and menthol cigarettes are just as dangerous as normal cigarettes.”

If you’re worried about missing out on menthol cigarettes, there is a solution!

Here at £1 Vape, we can absolutely understand that many smokers are accustomed to menthol cigarettes and may be concerned about no longer being able to access them via legitimate retailers.

There is, though, another response that you might make to this. You could use it as an opportunity to embrace the world of vaping, by taking advantage of the extensive selection of menthol and Mint E-Liquids available from such online stores as ours!

With experts at Public Health England (PHE) having estimated that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking cigarettes, switching to the use of e-liquids could be one of the best decisions you make for your health, at a time when health is so high on the public agenda.

So, why not browse our range of menthol and mint e-liquids online today, before making the most of the competitive pricing that gives our online store its name?

Don’t forget, too, that we send all orders via First Class Royal Mail, aiming to ship orders received before 5pm by the next working day. So, act now, and you could be enjoying your new menthol and mint e-liquids well before the 20th May ban even kicks in!
