What Technology is used in Metal Fabrication?

by Hydrovern Heroes The Hydrovern Heroes

Summary: The technology used in metal fabrication is called CAD. It is computer-aided designing that allows error-free designing of prototypes.

Metal fabrication plays a crucial role in the manufacturing process. It is the final stage of designing where a prototype is prepared for approval. If everything goes well, the design is approved and sent for mass production.

For example, take a part of a car. The carmaker makes that specific part after much deliberation with their design engineers. First, a blueprint of the part is prepared and discussed. They try making it a perfect design but there are more steps involved before the part is sent for mass production.

The injection molded plastic parts of automobiles are good examples of the manufacturing process. Each part fulfills a specific objective like design and it is carefully designed so that it blends well with the greater automobile design. Automobile parts manufacturers take the help of fabricators that turn a blueprint of a design into a real product.

There was a time when parts were directly sent to factories for making prototypes but today technology has changed the process. Today 3D models of parts are created to remove human errors, prevent wastage of material, and save cost. A 3D model shows the right dimensions of a product and gives the right idea about the design, features, and functions of the product.

A computer-aided design (CAD) is used for metal fabrication. Machines do all the jobs like cutting, casting, forging, punching, drawing, milling, drilling, turning, and extrusion with the help of computers. The CAD software makes it an automated process where there is no chance of error. Machines work according to the 3D design.

Soon, a prototype of the product is prepared and sent for approval to the client. The client can showcase the product to his shareholders and get their approval. Since the prototype is prepared with computer-aided design, the company that is the owner of the product can have full confidence over the product.

Similar CAD software and automated technology are used for injection molded plastic parts. It saves time and cost as well. First, a 3D design is created, and then it is sent for making a prototype. It is easier to check a computerized design and remove errors. Once the 3D design is approved for making the prototype, it can be sent for fabrication.

All design-related adjustments are made in the 3D design and it is sent for making the prototype. Computer-aided automatic machines carve the design from a piece of metal and make a prototype from that metal. Since the fabrication job is aided by a 3D design, the prototype made gets easy approval.

Computer-aided metal fabrication has made things easier for manufacturers. Designing prototypes of new products has never been so quick and affordable before the advent of CAD software and automated machines.
