What should we do on Naga Chaturthi
by Astro Ved Online Astrology ConsultationNaga Panchami is a day on
which Hindus worship snakes and the lord of snakes, Lord Shiva. The day arrives
on the fifth day of the waxing moon in July or August. Naga Panchami is
celebrated because of the important Hindu legends related to it.
The Legends
One legend is related to
Takshak, who was the king of snakes. When he once bit king Parikshit, the
father of Janamejaya, the son decided to take revenge. After becoming the king,
Janamejaya performed a yagna to kill all the snakes. However, Astika Rishi
stopped the king from committing such a sin and saved the snakes' lives. Hence
since that day, it is celebrated as Naga Panchami, on which people serve snakes
by giving them milk and worshipping Lord Shiva.
Another famous legend is
related to Lord Krishna and the poisonous snake Kaliya. The legend is also a
part of several Krishna stories where he made the snake realize his mistake.
People of Gokul were afraid because of Kaliya residing in the Yamuna. Kaliya
was polluting the water of Yamuna by making it venomous.
Krishna went deep down into
the depth where Kaliya tried to attack him and dig his fangs. However, Krishna
dragged him out on the surface and began playing his flute on his head. Kaliya
was spilling blood and started to die. Then the many wives of Kaliya requested
Krishna to leave him. Kaliya then understood that Krishna was not any simple
child; he was the avatar of Lord Vishnu himself. Kaliya left the banks of river
Yamuna and never troubled anyone. Hence to remember the day, Naga Panchami is
celebrated.
Sometimes, it is also called
Garuda Panchami because Garuda, the eagle of Lord Vishnu, is also worshipped
with the sakes.
To celebrate this day, people
visit Lord Shiva and snake deities. They offer them milk, sweets, and flowers.
Some people in the villages also offer milk to snake pits. Women observe a fast
on this day and follow it wholeheartedly. They break the fast at the Sunset and
accept a simple dinner.
