What Schools in Gurugram Doing for Students’ Safety

by Mount Olympus Mount Olympus

The crime and mishaps that occur towards children have come as a wake-up call for Gurgaon's schools. Some of the city's school principals are taking certain measures to ensure the safety of their students. Best schools in Gurgaon never compromise on the safety and security of their students. It’s been their topmost priority. This is because children can be educated only in a safe and secure environment.

Security Measures Taken

Schools take security measures and are put under the scrutiny of an independent audit. Modern security equipments such as CCTV cameras and GPS, installed in all school buses. These equipments are checked twice every week in order to see if all of them are in working order. Safety is non-negotiable and it is important to ensure that all children are under surveillance the entire time. Their safety and security is kept of prime priority. When it comes to school children’s safety no chances must be taken.

Resources Required to Ensure Safety

Time, effort and resources all these have to be pooled together efficiently and effectively to get all systems and processes in place. This is to make sure that the school environment is safe. These resources include police verification of each and every contractual support staff and maintenance of restricted access to student areas for non-teaching staff. CCTV cameras must be installed at all focal points in the school.

With the help of regular monitoring, schools and educational institutions can make sure that optimal working conditions are maintained along with the superior quality of security. For utmost security, CCTV surveillance should be made available on all floors and in each and every corridor, as well as on the school grounds. There should be a dedicated team of staff posted outside student's common washrooms at all times.

Furthermore, there should be floor-in-charges to cover all the floors during dispersal. This also includes when the students come in. However, it is crucial that the onus should be on schools to do more to comply with all the safety rules and regulations. When the authorities draft out the school policy or rules and regulations, they should be equally appropriate to or in tandem with the regulations enforced by the authority. The quality should be minimum at that standard and even more.

As a matter of fact, some schools install as much as 200 CCTV cameras and every floor of the school building has lady guards to keep a proper and vigilant check. All this is done with GPS in the school. Such schools are the proper representation of leaving no stone unturned to guarantee that the school’s students' safety is intact.

Other Safety Measures

In some playschools, authorities have deployed a unique and durable safety indoor tracking system. This system is made to use bluetooth devices within the school premises in order to provide near real-time information to parents, guardians or near dear ones immediately. It utilizes the GPS devices in buses to track kids while they are on their way to school and back. This GPS System shows the location live to their parents on the phone apps and on a map too.

Top schools of Gurgaon have separate toilets for support staff for many years. They also add CCTV cameras outside the toilets and in each and every corridor. After the occurrence of terrible incidents recently, many school authorities make sure that they put an additional female attendant in front of all toilets. On the other hand, students are also trained to be aware and cautious.

Children have been told to go to toilets, tuck shop or medical rooms in twos. It is made sure that junior students are always accompanied by one of their teachers or the nannies when they are leaving the classroom to go to the washroom. On the other hand, the school authorities have ensured to keep separate sessions to educate the children and raise awareness on topics like good touch, bad touch, cyber safety and bullying to keep unfortunate and gruesome incidents against children at bay.

Schools must also ensure the following:

  • Badges and name tags must be mandatory to be worn by both teaching and non-teaching staff at all times.

  • Timely Police verification of both teaching and non-teaching staff.

  • Child protection cells must be well established and child protection policies should be drafted to ensure the same is implemented within the school premises.

  • Psychometric evaluation of all the teaching and non-teaching staff should always be undertaken thoroughly.

  • Visitors should have limited and supervised access to the school.

It is disheartening that we have to talk about the safety of children in educational institutes. There is also a need to have one single comprehensive legislation that could cover all the specific key areas regarding safety and security in schools. However, these measures which can and should be taken must be implemented soon so that when it comes to the safety of schoolchildren, it's always, better to be safe than sorry.
