What Mistakes Should You Avoid While Decorating Your Home?

by Narasimha Reddy Challa Manager at Adisesh Projects

Decorating a home can have many personal preferences and feelings attached to it. Every individual can have their own taste and choice of decorating a house. But, there must be a proper blend of comfort, elegance and utility in every house. There are certain universal tips to be followed to avoid creating common mistakes that many people make.

Select the furniture before the paint

Once you get your house painted, you won’t be repainting it for the next few years. Same goes for the purchase of furniture. All these are expensive. So, you must make sure to have the walls and furniture complementing one another. The best way is to select the furniture you want to place in a room before having the paint on, rather than the other way round. Once you decide on the type and colour of the furniture, you can easily choose what colour to paint the rooms. But, if you first paint your rooms, it isn’t necessary that you get the piece of furniture that goes well with it. Or maybe you might be getting a great offer on some specific furniture. Will you want to let go of it only because you already got your house painted in a hurry in a colour that doesn’t complement it?

Don’t select loud colours

A few people want to experiment with different colours to make their house stand apart from the others and make it the talk of the town. But, they often make mistakes of painting the room in colours that are too garish or loud. Avoid painting your rooms in a bright red or pink, which would look great in the magazines but, not in reality. Painting your rooms a dark purple or royal blue will make it look majestic for a while. But, after a few months, you might feel your room looking too dark and boring. So, use lighter pastel shades of any of your favourite colours. And, if you really love a particular bright or bold colour, you can highlight one wall of the room in that colour.

Don’t overdo with a single colour

You might have picked up a theme for decorating your house. For example, if you have taken up the theme of white, you start by painting the walls white and start getting all sorts of white furniture including sofas, tables, chairs, curtains and everything else. And then you put up showpieces made of glass all around. Don’t you think that would be too much of white? Even though you plan up a theme, it is necessary that you have a little bit of colour variation. Creating a completely white room with tinges of different colours here and there will not destroy your theme. In fact, it will create places of interest in your room.

Don’t clutter your house with furniture

You might have seen lots of furniture at the stores and bought everything you loved. But, when you place all of it in your rooms, it creates a disaster! It isn’t necessary that everything you like at the stores is going to look good when placed at your home. Every piece of furniture has its own beauty. Be very careful to mix and match different pieces together. Also, keep in mind the size of furniture you require for your room, big enough to be comfortable and one that also allows space in the room.

Install the right amount of lighting

Lighting is one of the most important elements to create the perfect atmosphere of a house. You need a balance of natural light during the day and artificial light during night. Make sure not to block the flow of natural light into the house. Enhance natural light by placing mirrors in a way that it allows light to bounce around the room. Have a centre lighting source overhead and also have other lights and lamps well placed around the room. Don’t stick to only a single source of lighting.
