What is the Role of a Cardiac Surgeon ?by Rahul Tyagi Team Leader
The word cardiac is related to our heart. It is one of the most important parts of the body which plays the function of circulating blood to different parts of the body. It is the reason why our body is provided with oxygen and essential nutrients. To maintain a normal and healthy lifestyle, it is very important for our heart to work ideally. But there are various conditions which hamper its work. One of those conditions is a cardiac arrest. In end stage, this problem is treated by cardiac surgeons in India.
Cardiac arrest is the sudden condition in which heart loses its function as well as consciousness. It is a medical emergency which should be treated immediately otherwise it can turn out to be fatal. The symptoms of this condition are severe. Some of them are –
• Sudden collapse of the body.
• No pulse.
• Loss in breathing.
• Loss of consciousness.
• Pain in chest.
The main cause of cardiac arrest is abnormality in the rhythm of the heart. It is the result of the problem which is present in the heart’s electrical system. There are different risk factors related to this condition such as family history of coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, obesity, diabetes etc. One of the treatments in this condition is coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG).
Dr. Samin K Sharma of Eternal hospital is one of the best known and highly experienced doctors to impart that procedure. CABG is a surgical procedure in which the flow of blood is diverted around a section of a blocked artery in the heart. The primary aim of this surgery is to improve the flow of blood. There are different reasons to undergo this procedure –
• Severe chest pain caused primarily by narrowing of several arteries.
• When angioplasty and stenting is not helping.
• In case of more than one diseased coronary artery.
• Left coronary artery, which supplies most of the blood to the left ventricle, is severely narrowed.
• If previously you have been treated with angioplasty but it has not worked well.
In this surgery, a section of the healthy blood vessel is taken from inside the chest wall and attached above and below the blocked artery to divert the flow of the blood around the narrowed portion of the artery. After the procedure, you will be shifted to ICU for monitoring.
