What Is the Importance of Sampling in Apparel Merchandising in Delhi and What Are the Types

Apparel merchandising can be considered a core technical sphere of fashion designing, sometimes considered an entirely different discipline than fashion, although certainly a part of it. Various fashion designing colleges in Delhi offer an apparel merchandising course in addition to miscellaneous fashion technology courses.

Apparel Merchandising Course and Sampling

Sampling is one of those processes which hold utmost importance in apparel merchandising. This is so because the buyers usually place orders after reviewing the quality of the samples. These samples are of various types, and buyers require these different types of samples before and after placing orders. Apparel merchandisers, thus, as well as students pursuing fashion designing courses have to be well acquainted of different stages of garments sampling to execute an order.

Different Types of Samples

  • The Design Sample or Proto-sample

This sample of the sample garment is made mainly to see the design.Garments material and colour are not considered for this sample.

  • The Fit Sample

This sample is prepared following actual measurement. This sample is made to test the fitting, and a live model is used to check the fitting.

  • Counter Sample or Style Reference Sample

This sample is made after receiving a sample from the buyer. The buyer sends a sample to check the workmanship of an apparel manufacturer.

  • Mock-up Sample

This is a sample of a part of the garment (sleeve, collar, front/back panel etc.) and not the complete garment. It is made as per buyer’s requirement to serve a particular purpose.

  • Salesmen/Promotional/Photo-shoot Sample

The samples are prepared with actual colour and yarn/fabric to be worn by the models on the event of photo shoot for catalogue.Actual material and colour are mandatory for this sample.

  • Approval Sample

This sample is sometimes needed to confirm what a buyer has approved.

  • Size-set Sample

Size set samples are made to ensure measurement of each size in all colour combos.

  • Pre-production (PP) Samples

Pre-production samples are made with the actual material when bulk fabric and accessories to ensure the buyer that the bulk materials are in house for production.

  • Production Samples

Production samples are sent to the buyer to ensure them that the bulk production is going on produced as per their requirement following technical specifications and approved sample.

  • Top Of Production (TOP) Samples

These samples are taken when the first production is online. Buyers ask for TOP sample to cross-check that the factory/manufacturer is following Pre-production sample.

  • Shipment/Fulfilment Sample

The samples that reflects the final shipment are shipment samples. The samples ensure that goods have been shipped as per the samples.
