What is the eligibility to pursue Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in India?

by Neha Gupta Neha Tales

Aircraft maintenance engineering helps students gain knowledge about inspections, maintenance procedures, and system repairs of aircraft. The aircraft maintenance engineering course also imparts knowledge about aviation regulations, safety, and compliance.

Students are given a basic understanding of aircraft parts, tools, and equipment, used in maintenance operations. The demand for aircraft maintenance engineering is on the rise nowadays. The rise of the aviation industry and the increase in the number of aircraft purchases is the reason for the demand for aircraft maintenance engineers.

DGCA Approval

Airline companies and aircraft manufacturers are hiring AMEs to perform maintenance or repair of their fleets. The curriculum of AME is regulated by DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) covering aircraft maintenance, including inspections, repairs, and overhauls.

Aircraft maintenance engineers are experts and skilled personnel with a unique set of skills and certifications. To become an aircraft maintenance engineer, candidates have eligibility criteria before pursuing an AME course.

AME Entrance

The students applying for AME Entrance should have completed 10 +2 from a recognized board with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as subjects. Another eligibility criteria are a passed diploma certificate from a polytechnic of any stream.

AME courses need a technical background that helps students understand scientific principles that function in an aircraft. For AME Entrance, candidates should clear an entrance exam for aviation courses like AME, and pilot training, and the test is named SSAT (Sha-Shib Scholarship & Aptitude Exam).

Basic Eligibility

The AME Entrance tests the basic knowledge in maths, physics, and chemistry or aptitude towards the technical field. A medical fitness certificate is also required for AME courses, as the work of an AME is mechanical and demands a certain level of physical fitness. Fluency in English is also advantageous for AME as the medium of instruction in AME courses is in English only.

Sha-Shib Group

Sha-Shib group of aviation institutions is a leader in providing aviation education in India. The group offers many courses such as aircraft maintenance engineering, pilot training, air hostess training, and airport management. The group has many campuses in India, including Bangalore, Guna, and Cochin, with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.

Sha Shib Group of Institutions is approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and drives the quality of aviation education according to national and international standards.

The group has tenured faculty who are dedicated patrons in the AME field and they have a wealth of experience in the aviation industry. The group provides practical training, with students given hands-on training in modern aircraft.

Sha-Shib group has many tie-ups with other airlines and aviation companies, providing students with placement opportunities. The group provides scholarships to deserving students, which makes aviation education more accessible.

AME Course Duration

Usually, the duration of an AME course is three years, divided into six semesters. AME courses impart knowledge for a certain number of hours. After successful completion of a 3-year-long AME course, the students can apply for DGCA-conducted AME courses.

The licensee provides insight to employers about the amount of knowledge to maintain and repair aircraft for safe operation. The skillset of the licensed AME is in global demand with a lot of job opportunities with job placements in various countries.
