What is the difference between an art and a science?

by Pankaj Sharma Education

Management in all business and organizational activities is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization  or a group of one or more people or entities or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal. Resourcing here means the deployment and manipulation of human resources, financial resources, technological resources, and natural resources.
Since organizations can be viewed as systems, management can also be defined as human action, including design, to facilitate the production of useful outcomes from a system.  Management is like investment whose main goal is to get the most out of resources and get the best return. This concept includes self-management as well as managing people as manager.  By managing ones time and listing out the things by prioritizing , one learns to manage yourself and other scarce resources at their disposal in order to do a good job. Best result is achieved when one pursues Management degree program from one of Best MBA College in Delhi/NCR, to turn them as Smart managers.

Characteristics of Management

Main characteristics of management are:

·         Management is termed to be process or series  of continuing and related activities.

·         Management concentrates on reaching organizational goals.

·         Management tend to achieve its goals by working with people and other organizational resources.

Management as Art

An art may be defined as personalized application of general theoretical principles for achieving best possible results. It implies application of knowledge and skills to bring desired result.  Management involves doing things artistically in the light of the realities of a situation. Management is termed to be art as it organizes and uses talent resources. Manager’s not only need to have necessary abilities to lead but should also possess set of  skills acquired through time , experience and practice. The art of managing is creative attribute of manager which is enriched by education, training and experience.

Following are characteristics of management as arts:

·         Arts needs practical application of knowledge as learning theory is not sufficient to make good manager, as one need to know how to apply management knowledge in real life situation.

·         Since artistic work is not limited to simply practical knowledge, he need to think out of the box and need to do extra ordinary things every day, managers have to regularly think out of box to derive possible solution to complex problem.

·         Management need to be goal or result oriented

·         Artist becomes perfect with practice and so do the managers also need to regularly learn from their mistakes in past to become more expert with management thought process.

Management as Science

Science is a systematic body of knowledge which establishes cause and effect relationship between two or more variables and based on principles governing their relationship. These principles are derived through scientific method of observation and verification through testing. Science is obtaining information about a particular object by a systematic pattern of observation, study, practice, experiments and investigation.

Management also follows the same pattern as science where one gathers the data, possess facts and figures and make right decision based on analysis done by managers. Management needs to follow systematic method to find the possible solutions to a problem. Though management cannot be termed as pure science due to involvement of human elements, but study of scientific foundations of management practice can definitely improve one’s management skills. Managers who attempt to manage without management science have to trust their intuition or luck at their peril rather than their expertise or skill.

Management as Art and Science both

Science teaches us to know certain principal while art teaches us how to do things differently and creatively. In order to be successful, managers have to know and do things effectively and efficiently. This requires a unique combination of both science and art of managing in them while managing the scarce pool of resources and human talent in the organization. It is rightly termed that art of managing begins where the science of managing stops.  Since the science of managing is imperfect, the manager must turn to the artistic managerial ability to perform a job satisfactorily in real time situation.

Thus, it may be said that managing in practice is definitely an art but the body of knowledge, methods, principles etc. underlying the practice is science making it complementary to each other rather than conflicting one.

Conclusion

Like any other practice-whether engineering, accountancy, law or medicine; Management is an also combination of art and science. Artistic application of management know-how is evident from the fact that managing things artistically in light of real situations requires regular practice to become perfect. Similarly modern managers can achieve best by using the knowledge, methods, concepts, and theories while managing pool of talents at workplace.
