What is the Best Time of Year to Adopt a Puppy?

by Herding Pups More puppy reservation

In short, it depends.  But there are a few common factors to consider for the best possible decision.

Adopting a puppy is a big decision.  A lot of thought goes into deciding the right age to adopt a puppy, what time is the most preferable to adopt a puppy, how the breeder has raised the puppy, and so on.  If you are adopting a puppy for herding, it becomes crucial to choose the right time of year as you have to train your little puppy so that it becomes a full-fledged duty dog.

If you are adopting a puppy from a herding breed, like the Catahoula Leopard from countryside Catahoula Breeders, the decision becomes highly-important as the breed initially requires a little extra effort to train.

So, what is the best time to adopt a puppy?

Let’s find out.

Summer

Most owners prefer adopting puppies in the summer.  The reasons are simple: there is more time to establish a bond with your puppy, you have more daylight to train the puppy, your children are on vacation so it is easy for the puppy to develop a bond with family, and sunshine is ideal for puppy potty training.  You can frequently take out your puppy for potty breaks without worrying about the weather.  Hence, it is generally easier to train puppies in the summer.

Spring

Spring is considered the next best time to adopt a puppy.  The weather is pleasant during the spring, making it ideal for participating in outdoor activities for you and your puppy.  When you are adopting a puppy for herding, ensure that your puppy gets enough daily activity as herding breeds, like Heeler and Catahoula, are highly-physical and active breeds.  Spring is a great time for establishing a schedule for your new puppy.

Fall

If spring and summer are not the right time for you and if you are adopting a herding Catahoula puppy in the fall from Catahoula Leopard breeders, it is neither too hot nor too cold in the fall.  You have sufficient time to take your puppy out for a walk and outdoor activities, and enough time to house-train your puppy.

Winter

Winter is the least-preferred time as it is snowy outside and the weather is not pleasant, but it does not mean you cannot adopt a puppy in winter.  If you don’t have free time any other time of year, adopt a puppy in winter.  It’s just that it will be a little harder to train your puppy.

So, considering the ease of training, summer and spring are the best times to adopt a puppy.
