What is tartar?
by Dr. Maya Shantikumar A Healthy Mouth for a Healthy BodyTartar is also known as calculus. It is the dental plaque that has accumulated on the teeth and gums and hardened. Therefore, it becomes difficult for us to remove this by ourselves. There are times when the tartar reaches underneath the gum line and even affects the gum tissues. There are serious health implications from the excessive growth of tartar as it can lead to cavities and gum diseases.
Tartar is also a cosmetic problem because it has the ability to make the teeth appear dirty and unhygienic. As tartar is porous, it absorbs all the stains from food items and drinks and can make teeth appear unclean. Therefore, one should seek immediate consultation with a dentist. We offer routine check-ups to dental patients and in cases of tartar build-up, we have a range of treatment options suited towards effective removal of tartar and ensuring safety of the procedure.
