What is ping, and why is it important?

by Test My Internet Speed Internet Speed Test

Ping (latency is the technically more correct term) means the time it takes for a small data set to be transmitted from your device to a server on the Internet and back to your device again.

Ping refers to two-way latency (aka round-trip delay), a value relevant for Internet usage. A ping test is measured internet speed in milliseconds and is indicative of the delay in time that the data takes in travelling to its destination.

Speed test- You can check your internet speed with speed test tool at testmyinternetspeed.org, It's a globally connected world, experiencing a slow internet connection is obviously frustrating and there comes the need to check your best internet speeds with speed test app.

Majority of the internet speed test tools tend to test the ping speed test rate just because they contact the server somehow. The internet speeds seem to be slower most of the time than they should actually be, because of the IP overhead.

Checking and reducing Ping

A ping request can be performed using the ping command; it's a standard command-line interface. Various network utilities implement a ping feature, which lets you ping a server by simply entering the IP address or domain name.

Ping response time is important because it adds overhead to any requests made over the Internet. Pings are especially important in online gaming, where events happen in real-time.

In general latency under 100ms is considered to be good. Higher latency like as 200ms isn’t good as these make your internet connection appear slower than it actually is and may also cause interruptions in the activities like video chatting.

Importance of Ping

The ping is a command prompt command that is applied to test the ability of the source computer to reach a specified destination computer. It's normally used as a simple way to verify that a computer can communicate over the network with another computer or network device.

If you ever run a speed test on your computer or network, you have used the ping command whether knowingly or unknowingly. A bouncing message of a remote server and testing the amount of time it takes to return. Pings are useful for a variety of reasons, including troubleshooting connectivity, devices, and networks.

Troubleshooting Connectivity

Ping is used to troubleshooting connectivity. Mostly it’s practised to test the connection between two machines. Ping test uses a network printer or copier connection to resolve whether a device is offline or to verify you can connect to a router.

  •  If you have difficulty with an application hosted over a network on a server, one of the first things you want to do is check the connection using a series of ping commands to help you narrow down the problem.

  • If ping comes back with fast response times, your connection is good so the problem likely lies with the server or application.

You also have the option to ping websites to detect if they are operating and whether there’s a problem with the connection.

Troubleshooting Networking Issues

Every network-connected equipment will respond to a ping which makes it incredibly worthy to check networking connections. Ping can be used to test routers or servers for throughput and speed.

Ping across a range of positions to find all attached equipment in an appropriate range. With Ping, You can test computer names and addresses of computers. When you can ping an IP address, but not a computer name, there’s likely a name resolution issue.

Final Words

Ping speed test used to determine the routing between your system and that of the target computer is functioning and what sort of delay you can expect when transferring data.

The network diagnosis, the command line program provides ping information about the network connection quality between two computers.
