What is Karthigai Deepam? What is Shasthi Thithi?

Karthigai Deepam mainly celebrated in South India. It is one of the oldest festivals celebrated by Tamilians. Houses are decorated with Deepam or lamps in the evening of the festival day. It is the day when Nakshatra Karthikai or Krittika is active. It is done in honor of Shiva, one of the trinities. According to Vedic culture, on this day Lord Shiva converted himself in an endless flame of light to prove his supremacy to Brahma and Vishnu.Shasthi Thithi or Shraddha is done for the deceased family memebrs who died on Shasthi Tithi including both Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha.

Dos

Observe fast if possible, meditate and chant Mantras for Shiva, Hanuman, Murugan and the Sun.

Chant Gayatri Mantra 108 times at Sunrise.

Pray to ancestors and do all rituals to please them and feed them and seek their blessings. 

Chant Hanuman chalisa and keep a red flower in the Eastern part of the house at Sunrise.


Don’ts


Refrain from bad habits and behavior. 

Do not misuse power, fame, intelligence or wealth.

Do not hurt anyone especially.

Do not disrespect your religion or any religious scriptures.


Mantras to be chanted at least 108 times


Om Namah Shivaaya


Meaning – I salute Shiva, one of the trinities in Hinduism.


Om Sri Suryaaya Namaha


Meaning – I salute Surya (The Sun God).


Om Sri Aangaarakaaya Namaha


Meaning – I salute Mars, one of the Navagrahas.
