What is JavaScript & Why is it Important?

by Martin Peels Content Writer
If you are someone looking forward to stepping into the world of web development, then you need to know that HTML and CSS are not just enough, above that JavaScript has taken the world by storm. Over the past 20 years or so since when JavaScript was released, it has become the most important programming language for web development today. As per current reports, JavaScript is being used by 95 percent of all websites.

So you certainly need to hire professional JavaScript developer, otherwise, you will miss the train. JavaScript, also known as JS, is very popular and adopted universally by every web browser for its support, which allows dynamic content to get executed on a webpage. It is an object scripting language that is used in web pages along with markup language HTML.

JS stands unique as it brings out all the special functionalities in the client's browser instead of the site's server. But what remains unquestioned is whether are the businesses aware of the power of JavaScript?

JavaScript: The Hero

As we have stated above, HTML and CSS might be the star web programming languages, but JavaScript remains the silent hero. And there is a reason for it.

When you are new to something, you usually search for definitions. In the JavaScript case, you might end up with more questions than you came up with. You might have heard and read a lot that it is a client-side programming language, which is without a doubt true. But it is also kind of diminutive to what JavaScript actually is today. But we will take a look at this aspect later.

Okay, so coming back to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. To get the most basic version of websites, HTML and CSS are used, but the main role of making websites interactive is done by JavaScript. By this, we mean that HTML designs a basic layout of a webpage giving it a basic structure while CSS guides the browser as to what content needs to be displayed according to the font, color, and spacing.

What about the website's look? To add life to a webpage and add functionality, the feel part is given by JavaScript. That is, JavaScript is responsible for adding responsive content to the page like buttons, drop-down menus, and sliding bar. In addition, it is also used to add animations, maps, and other features to make the UI more interactive.

Earlier, JavaScript was only designed for client-side purposes but now serves as an all-purpose programming language, as it is running the whole software stack all by itself. This is only possible with the help of Node.js which can be run on the server-side as well. JavaScript is read, interpreted, and executed in the user's browser on the client's end. While on the server side it runs on a remote system.

For now, it is better to say that JavaScript is a tool for developers to add interactivity to websites!

Why is JavaScript Important?

  1. Hire Professional JavaScript Developers means added versatility: When they have mastered the language, the gateways to endless opportunities are open for you. Since you read above that it is also a client-side scripting language, it can be used for frontend development which is done using Angular.js, and for server-side, Node.js can be used. Hence, if you need frontend development, hire JavaScript developer is a must! Plus, the times are changing now, modern browsers now have the capacity to make these interactive and fully dynamic.
  2. JavaScript might still be for the front end but it is doing much more than that! From server-side code, and mobile apps to API integrations, it is doing much more than it was earlier. For instance, there were a few unsuccessful attempts to make JavaScript run on the server-side from the very beginning. Until the arrival of Node.js everyone thought that it would never become a stable backend language. And when it comes to mobile apps, in the past, you would need other languages to develop great mobile applications, like Objective-C or Java. It is now easier to use JavaScript to connect to mobile APIs though.
  3. Responsive web design: More and more developers need to adapt their design across multiple browsers and devices to make a website accessible and work well. Responsive web design enables the developers to optimize the website on a computer and mobile devices using the same code. By combining HTML5, CSS3 & JavaScript they can do so within a single code base. Hence, your developer will use JavaScript to optimize your web pages for the mobile device.
