What Is Involved In A Root Canal Treatment Procedure?

by Dr. Nima Dejbod Endodontic Treatment

A root canal treatment is one of the most feared dental procedures we have currently. When someone has untreated dental infections, causing tooth decay, it becomes necessary to get a root canal treatment in order to prevent the bacteria from causing any further damage to the teeth. The process involves the removal of the infected tissue material and replacing it with a dental filling inside the pulp cavity.

What causes the infection?

The outer layers of our teeth are prone to damage and decay due to the build-up of plaque and bacteria in and around the teeth surface. When we ignore proper oral hygiene, it can lead to the further deepening of the infection, thus reaching deep inside our teeth to the pulp cavity. This is the zone that houses the nerve endings and connective tissues and provides nutrients to the tooth and gums. When the pulp cavity is infected, it leads to the build-up of tooth abscess and pus, which causes pain and swelling in and around the teeth. Ignoring this problem for too long can cause one to also face the risk of damage to the surrounding bone structure.

While the prime cause of the dental tooth infection is due to the build-up of bacteria in the teeth, here are also certain other causes that can lead to damage to the root canal. These include major accidents, leakage from dental flings or due to the infection in the gums.

The root canal procedure:

This process involves removal of the infected tissue material and cleaning and sterilizing of the root canal. Many enddontists recommend antibiotics for about a week and then perform the root canal treatment procedure. Usually it takes 3-4 sittings to get the root canal cleaned and the infection removed.

Firstly, the endodontist uses local anaesthesia to make sure that you cannot feel any pain while the procedure is performed. Next, with a dental drill, a hole is made that allows access to the pulp cavity. With the help of small files, all of the infected tissue matter is taken out and the entire area is cleaned and sterilized with care. After this, a dental filling is used to cover the pulp cavity and the area is sealed off. Then, a dental crown covers the teeth and protects the pulp cavity from further damage.

After the procedure has been performed, one also needs to maintain proper after care in order to make sure that the dental filling does not leak out. This involves practicing proper oral hygiene as well as avoiding to eat hard foods. When you take proper care, your root canal treatment can show long lasting results.

A root canal treatment is a costly procedure and hence people often shy away from getting the treatment. However, if you have severe infection causing immense pain and swelling, you should definitely get the treatment and from an experienced endodontist that can perform the procedure well. For root canal therapy Issaquah, you will find numerous endodontists that can offer you a good service and it is important you choose your preferred doctor after having gone through their reviews and quality of service.
