What is Invisalign?

by Richard Caven Dentist

How Does Invisalign Work

Adults are often very reluctant to get orthodontic corrections. Corrections, such as braces, can improve the appearance and health of the mouth significantly. Because of a new product, Invisalign, dentists have been starting to see a change in the way people think about having braces.

All about Invisalign Treatments

Invisalign isn’t like the other treatments used in orthodontic corrections. They are custom fit to your mouth and are made from a smooth BPA-free plastic. The plastic takes the place of brackets and wires that you may see in traditional braces. They also have a removable design that looks similar to a bit guard. The device is replaced every two weeks, allowing your teeth to align over time and create the desired bite. Invisalign, like its name suggests, is also transparent. Talk to your dentist ahead of time to see if they have the special training needed to offer you Invisalign.

Perfect Invisalign Candidates

To see if you qualify for Invisalign, you first need to schedule an appointment with your dentist. They will give you all the details on the product and help determine if Invisalign will help you achieve your dental goals. Invisalign assists with a number of different dental issues including spacing, crowding, overbite, underbite and crossbite. It may also be used in straightening procedures. Adults that had braces in the past may also benefit from Invisalign.

What Invisalign Can Do for You

Invisalign is a customized treatment that allows you to cater your braces to your specific needs. This allows you to stay informed about your treatment and keeps you in control. You will know what to expect at each stage and should see results within one year of treatment. This is the same length of time teens wear braces to correct problems. Pricing will vary a little bit. The treatment can cost as little as $2,000 or as much as $8,000. The average price is about $5,000. These expenses can be offset by insurance, flexible spending accounts, payment plans and more.

How Treatment Works

Getting Invisalign starts with the patient taking a series of impressions and x-rays that will help the dentist create a three dimensional image of your teeth. The virtual depiction will also allow them to track your progress and movement, making it easier to make future corrections. They will also use the 3D technology to make aligners. You will use between 18 and 30 aligners, each worn for two weeks. Most patients will see results if the wear Invisalign for 20 to 22 hours per day, only removing them when they are flossing, brushing, eating or drinking. Dentist appointments can be made every six weeks to track your progress.

Invisalign is a treatment that often requires more information before deciding if it is for you. Contact a local dentist to learn more. Remember, corrective orthodontics can be pursued at any point.
