What is included in a game design course?

by Shantanu C. Mages Institute - Game Designing, Graphic Designin

Game development has become mainstream over the years. Nowadays, games have become an essential part of our lives and are being used for several purposes like learning through games in school, using games to showcase live models in various fields like medicine, agriculture, industrial and using games for entertainment purpose. And with this increase in demand of games, the job opportunities for game developers has also increased. From the last two decades, thousands of job opportunities have opened up for developers such as a game programmer, game AI engineer, network engineer, game tools programmer, UI programmer and many more.

The diploma in game technology helps students through the entire game development cycle, from pre-production to the finished product. The course aims to aid students with the excellent knowledge and understanding of game development helpful in qualifying for entry-level industry positions as game programmers, tool builders, I/O programmers and artificial intelligence programmers.

The modules under game design courses are as follows:

  1. Game Design Principles: In this module, students are taught the basic design principles which will help them develop a 3D model using observation and imagination.

  1. Programming 1: Basic Game Programming: This module introduces students to types of video games and the technological, strategic and artistic components that are involved in creating a game, which is followed by learning the algorithms mathematics, and physics of building a game. This course helps you develop and refine basic C++, Java and Flash programming skills to design computer and web-based applications for gaming. In addition to object-oriented programming languages, basic programming courses cover major scripting languages such as Python, JavaScript and Lua. Students build simple applications at the beginning and gradually advance to building their program applications with 2-D and 3-D graphics.

  1. Graphics Pipeline 1: Modern Graphics Theorem: In this module, the main focus shifts to creating graphics for the game. The success of any game depends highly on the quality of its graphic. The students will be taught to build graphic using various software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw among others.

  1. Artificial Intelligence in Games: Artificial intelligence is an essential part of game development. In this module, the game programmers will be taught to examine logic programming which would allow them to create non-playing characters that interact with a player's character in a video game and adversaries that respond to a player's actions.

  1. Portfolio: The main aim of this diploma in game technology is to train students in developing a game from start to finish. It focuses both on core knowledge as well as practical implementation of that knowledge. The main focus is for a student to have an impressive and effective portfolio at the end of the course.

In this game design course by MAGES Institute of Excellence, the main focus is on building core knowledge of a student and giving proper exposure to practical functioning as well. This course emphasises practical game development, and at the end of the course, the student goes into the industrial world with an impressive showreel/portfolio
