ICD is the acronym for International Classification of Diseases; ICD-10 is the 10th revision (clinical modification) of it.

Introduced under the medical classification list by the WHO (World Health Organization), ICD-10 is a system used by physicians and healthcare providers for classifying & coding all diagnoses. It includes signs, symptoms, ailments, severity, causes, and procedures recorded in conjunction with health care units -all across the world. It helps enhance the accuracy of epidemiology, diagnosis codes, and supports reimbursement models to pay health care providers with ease.

Though the work on ICD-10 began in 1983, these numeric/alphanumeric codes were first used by member states in 1994. The second edition came out in 2003, and the current ICD-10 version is ICD-10 2016. There are almost 70,000 codes that fall under ICD-10 CM

It is easier for medical billers and coders to understand ICD-10. However, if you want to know more, the WHO provides detailed information regarding the ICD-10 on its website. Also, the academies like AOP Training Institute, offer comprehensive training of Medical Billing and Coding through CPC, COC and CPT certification course, and also cover modules like ICD, ICD-10.
