What if Planets Retrograde in the Birth Chart?

Birth charts or Natal Chart  indicate the position of the planets by sign, house, and aspect. In astrology, one talks about a planet in retrograde sometimes. Retrograde in Latin (retrograde) means a ‘backward step.’ A planet is believed to be retrograde when it appears to be in backward motion due to the earth’s orbit. This is apparently an illusion. When the planets are at a close approach to the earth, the retrograde motion occurs. It is just an illusory side-effect of planetary proximity.

All planets go retrograde in cycles,except for the Sun and the Moon, and it is different for each planet.

People are normally under the illusion that when a planet becomes retrograde in a birth-chart, they may display some unique characteristics. A planet in retrograde does not necessarily mean a harmful impact; it depends on the placement and aspect.

A retrograde planet in a birth chart can give both positive and negative outcomes. Since they are closer to earth during this period, the impact is more. Retrograde planets are known as VakriGraha. It indicates some amount of fulfillment or pending Karma from a past life, regarding the significance of this planet.

Retrograde planets do not necessarily produce negative results. The compel reconsiderations of certain functions associated with them. They teach us some cosmic lessons in life. Just as planets apparently appear in a backward motion, we, too, are advised to take a pause in the jurisdiction of the retrograde planet, take stock, and cleanse ourselves.

When planets are retrograde, their power to do good or bad is enhanced. 

In a birth chart, if a planet happens to be the Lord of the Ascendant House and is in retrograde motion, then the native will be impacted by the retrograde planet, with the benefic or malefic outcome.

For example, if a native chart has a Pisces Ascendant and Jupiter happens to be the Lord of the Ascendant House and is in retrograde motion, then the native will be impacted by Jupiter,which is a benefic planet. The native will be inclined towards the Vedas, teaching, wisdom, knowledge, and can have a career in banking or finance

Conversely, if Jupiter retrogrades in the Ascendant, the native will be engaged in acquiring knowledge, teaching, and will be compassionate and lean towards charity. With Jupiter being the Lord of the 10th house, the native will not be stable in mind or decisive. There may be discontented with the job, as the native may be away from hometown, and loneliness is likely to set in, leaving the native emotionally highly charged.

The Sun and the Moon are luminous planets as they emit light and move in their usual motion. So, they do not become retrograde. 

The normal course of Rahu and Ketu, the shadow planets, is retrograde motion. The other planets keep moving in direct or retrograde motion. Planets like Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus that rotate around the Sun become retrograde once or twice every year.

When a planet retrogrades in a birth chart, it is possible the native may veer away from the normal from time to time.  A planet in retrograde becomes stronger in motion and makes the native work harder in aspects of the house signified by the planet. The conventional belief is that auspicious planets in retrograde can give positive results and malefic planets are likely to have a negative impact.

When Jupiter moves in retrograde, there may be a delay in the outcome. Natives may deviate from spirituality and focus more on the financial aspect. When Venus is in retrograde, it can impact emotionally and bring changes to personal life as in love and marriage. Mercury in retrograde can impact a native’s decision-making skills. 

When Saturn is in retrograde, it can produce negative results, and the native may experience delays in seeing things through. The retrograde motion of Mars may impact more adversely, as Mars is a significator of energy. When it is in retrograde motion, natives may find it difficult to invest their energy in the right place and hence face difficulties.

Rahu and Ketu retrograde in motion, and the outcome may be unusual or atypical. If they are in conjunction with or aspected by Jupiter, Mercury, or Venus without retrograde, the outcome may be positive.
