What Exactly Is Agile Project Management?

by Mary Frost web designer
Agile project management often describes a group of software development techniques, which have been used for over ten years now and continue to grow in popularity with many organisations, both large and small and in no way restricted to the software industry. Working with Agile methodologies allows organisations to make improvements to their product quality and also assists them to make sure those products and services can be developed quickly but professionally.

Using these methods a significant boost in expansion and growth is expected, resulting from improved levels of productivity. Its flexible approach encourages change and responds to it in a positive way. Whilst this approach is very different to traditional project management methods whereby the outcome of the project is planned in detail from beginning to end, that does not mean that Agile project management has an undisciplined approach to project development.

The end product with Agile project management is certainly less predictable, compared to using more traditional methods, but this is not necessarily a disadvantage. Issues commonly arise during the development stage of any project, but with Agile project managements positive attitude to change, problems can easily be resolved and the project can be adapted as necessary.

Employees are encouraged to work together to reach goals and share responsibility for a projects success. Routine team meetings play a key role in the teams success and ensure that everyone is focussed at all times. At the meetings, the whole team look at what progress has been made since the last meeting and plan the subsequent stage of the project. The team is self-organised without the need for anyone in a traditional project managers role and tasks are allocated the team members with the best skills to carry them out.

The most convenient set up when working on an Agile project is for the entire team to be under one roof and can easily meet. However this is not vital as it can be quite straightforward to apply the principles of Agile with success in a variety of other situations thanks to the fantastic array of technology we have at our fingertips to aid both one to one or group communication. The current state of the economy means that competition is tough and there is a great deal of emphasis on performance. Agile can really bring a lot to the table. Agile can do a lot to help any organisation compete more effectively through placing great emphasis on collaboration and teamwork to produce better results.

In terms of practicality and flexibility Agile delivers with excellent results, making it a highly useful option to explore.
