by Lal Pathlabs Health/Medical/Pharmaceuticals
What is Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin?

Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin, alternatively known as Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) is the average hemoglobin concentration present in the red blood cells. Hemoglobin helps the RBCs to carry oxygen to the tissues and other parts of the body.  A low MCHC content in the body can cause a number of diseases that are chronic in nature. However, in many cases, low or high Mean corpuscular hemoglobin content varies to a great extent even if the patient’s average red blood cell concentration is normal.

What are the symptoms of low MCHC?

The symptoms of MCHC are generally related to anaemia. Some of the common symptoms include -

•    Shortness of breath,
•    Excessive sweating,
•    Pale or dull skin,
•    Excessive fatigue and chronic tiredness,
•    Easily bruised or injured,
•    Extreme weakness,
•    Loss of stamina.

What are the causes of having Low Mean corpuscular hemoglobin?

The primary cause of having low mean corpuscular hemoglobin content in the body is Anemia. To be more specific, a condition known as Hypochromic Microcytic Anemia is highly responsible for low MCHC content in the body.  Hypochromic Microcytic Anemia occurs due to – lack of iron, if the body is unable to absorb iron, suffering from Celiac diseases, Hemolysis, Peptic ulcers, and Crohn’s diseases, undergoing gastric bypass surgery, etc.  In rare cases, Hypochromic Microcytic Anemia is also caused by – Cancer, Parasitic infections like hookworm infections, etc.

How to diagnose a Low MCHC Level?

Low level of MCHC can be diagnosed with the help of blood tests, including Complete Blood Count Test, MCHC blood test or Hemoglobin test, etc. The medical tests help the doctor to examine the iron level, reasons for frequent blood loss and other conditions such as Ulcers, Celiac disease, and Crohn’s disease.

How can it be treated and prevented?

Once the underlying cause is detected, doctors can suggest a complete treatment plan. In majority of the cases, a low Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin occurs due to Anemia, therefore, to treat and prevent the condition, doctors recommend the following things –

•    Taking regular iron supplements.
•    Increasing the intake of iron and fibre rich food. Some of the important foods rich in iron include – Beans, Seafood, Peas, Spinach, Meat or Chicken.
•    It is highly suggested to consume foods that are rich in Vitamin B-6. Some of them are – Bananas, Salmon fish, sweet potatoes, Wild Tuna fish, etc. Taking Vitamin-B6 helps in proper absorption of Iron.
