What does a web designer needs to know about Google Glass

by Shannon Carnton Web Designing and Web Development

Google Glass is currently the most futuristic device made for the common man. Information and conversations is right in front of your eyes, where in the trendy looking hardware (eyewear) is among the most sophisticated computers that one will ever get to use today. However, the limits of the Google Glass are as much as the capabilities of the internet. Google Glass, at its core, interacts via a browser. At this point in time, there are roughly 10,000 Glass Explorers onto the browser and the numbers will soon be growing. Consequently, more and more businesses will be asking for their website to be compatible with the Google Glass interface. This leads to the important discussion on what does the web developer need to know to integrate this responsiveness?

Firstly, what is Google Glass about?

While the product is still in its beta phase of testing, it is actually a small screen, shaped like an eyewear. The wearable technology is capable of taking photos; do voice calls, video chat, send text messages, browse the web (Google) and a variety of other things. The 10,000 users currently are all restricted to American citizens with a valid passport.

Google Glass Competition

While Google seems to lead this innovative technology/design, it is only likely that other competitors will soon come up with a similar product. We already have a gadget called Glass Up that claims to present the same features as Google Glass. It can be interpreted that soon we would have other launches. Wearable technology has been here for quite some time now with products like the iWatch (Apple), the Pebble Watch, FitBit, Jawbone UP, etc. as such, developers should be fully prepared for the challenges of Google Glass Web Development.

The Glass Browser

The Google Glass Browser doesn’t allow you to directly visit a website. Users are recommended websites and suggestive links based on their Google search. After a search entry, users need to select one of the Result Cards by scrolling and sliding the pad just behind the ear. They can even look around the links, zoom in or zoom out on the results. Google Glass web developers need to be quite mindful of these features as competition will be rising soon and now is the time to get in the fan following.

While desktop and traditional (non-responsive) websites render just fine in the Google Glass interface, it takes a lot of trouble for the user to read through them. Web developer need to maintain a certain level of precision when designing for the Google Glass interface.

It is quite important that you have a firsthand experience of the hardware as that is what matters to the end user. Entrepreneurs and website owners will be looking to Hire Google Glass Developers who would be thorough with the technology and would be able to create a professional experience. Developers should also keep in mind that the users of Google glass will be a different category of demographics than the regular smart phone users. Their demands and expectations will be at a different level altogether. Someone who will hire Google Glass developers will pay for supremacy and uniqueness.
