What Determines the Star Ratings of a Hotel?

While booking for a hotel, the star ratings of the hotel play a major role in helping to choose the correct hotel. Throughout the world, the star ratings are widely recognized as a definitive way to determine the overall quality and services of the hotel. However, the criteria for determining the rating differ worldwide. Countries like UK put more emphasis on customer service for determining the rating while France emphasizes more on rooms, lobbies and amenities. Italy on the other hand ranks the hotel based on its cleanliness.

The criteria can differ globally but there is a general consensus on some of the basic features which are assumed expectations universally to help determine the ratings of the hotel.

One-Star Hotels:

A one-star hotel offers the basic room options. It usually has a shared washroom. There is no restaurant or bar but usually has vending machines.

Two-Star Hotels:

The room options at a two-star hotel will be basic but it offers a bit more than one-star. It has colored television and phone in the room. There are separate attached bathrooms in every room. There is an in-house restaurant and bar as well where food is served.

Three-Star Hotels:

A three-star hotel goes a step further. It does not offer standard rooms for everyone but has different room options available. There are different categories of the rooms in the hotel. Usually there is a gym, conference room, business center. There are attached bathrooms with every room. A three-star hotel has room service available for the guests and they give Wi-Fi access in the public areas like lobby. The guests have access to their room without the key whether it is day or night. The rooms have internal telephones which gives them access to the reception 24/7.

Four-Star Hotels:

 There are higher expectations from a four-star hotel. It has several room options as well luxury suites. It has gym, large swimming pool, several on site bars and restaurants, concierge services and other such facilities. The food quality is high and the menu is extensive.24 hour room service is available. Extensive business facilities are also present. All 4 star hotels in Dubai have lavish business halls. Wi-Fi connection is available. There are attached bathrooms with thermostatically controlled showers.

Five-Star Hotels:

A five-star hotel is a luxury hotel with all the facilities of the 4-star hotels along with other exceptional qualities. There is an excellent staff with proactive customer service. There are highest levels of cleanliness, maintenance, hospitality and service. There are extensive fitness and spa facilities, butler services, valet parking, 24-hour reception, full afternoon tea and luxurious suites with rooms, lounge and kitchen.
