by Hari om Agrawal Retired engineer & websites owner

Dandruff is one of the most common hair problems faced by us. It is characterized by flaking of the skin in the scalp that often leads to itching and redness. Though the condition is not chronic, if you do not get rid of dandruff in the long run, it can increase the occurrence of hair loss and taint your appearance.

What causes dandruff?

Dandruff occurs when Malassezia, a naturally occurring scalp fungus, starts feeding on the oily matter secreted by the scalp and the dead skin cells. This causes irritation in the scalp and dryness, which ultimately results in the visibly occurring flakes due to the accumulation of dead skin.

An unbalanced diet, stress, and underlying skin problems are some of the other triggers of dandruff.

Can you get rid of dandruff permanently?

While there are many ways to manage dandruff, there is no certain way to get rid of it permanently. While most people prefer to go for chemical-based shampoos for managing their dandruff, it is recommended to stick to home remedies to get rid of dandruff as they do not have side effects on the quality of your hair.

Basic home remedies to get rid of dandruff:

Neem:

With its antibacterial and antifungal properties, using neem extract is a great way to manage dandruff. Neem extract helps keep your scalp skin healthy which reduces the occurrence of dandruff. To use it, just boil the leaves in water and use the cooled solution to wash your hair.

Lemon:

Lemon proves to be an effective ingredient in managing a dry scalp. Rinsing your hair with a solution of lemon in warm water nourishes your scalp and alleviates dryness. This ultimately helps in containing dandruff.

Adequate hydration:

Hydration plays a pivotal role in our overall well-being. Hence, drinking adequate amounts of water is very important to get rid of dandruff.

Aloe Vera Gel:

The effects of aloe vera on the skin are well known. Applying aloe vera gel on your head for about 15-20 minutes before washing your hair is an efficient way to remove dandruff and delay recurrence.

Vinegar:

For those of you with oily scalps, vinegar is the perfect home remedy for dandruff. Take half cup vinegar and mix it with thrice the volume of water to prepare a solution. Apply it on your head post shampooing and then dry it off. Regular application reduces the intensity of dandruff and avoids reoccurrence.
