Most of the time, we make a lot of effort taking care of our face, hair, clothes, and our looks in general. One part of our body that deserves attention but doesn’t quite get any is our Feet. Lack of attention can cause cracked heels which often results in broken or chapped skin, discomfort and pain.

What are the causes of cracked heels?

Before knowing the causes of cracked heels, we must first know what cracked heels exactly are. Cracked heels are a common foot problem amongst both males and females. It does not happen to adults alone as it also happens to children.

Cracked heels can be caused by medical conditions which may include psoriasis, aging, pregnancy, obesity, diabetes, atopic dermatitis, fungal infection, vitamin deficiency, hypothyroidism, etc.

Other causes of cracked heels are:

Standing on a spot for too long

Hot showers that stay too long

Wearing shoes that are not a perfect fit

Making use of harsh soaps that can reduce the natural oils on your skin

Walking barefoot or with sandals that have open backs

Dry skin caused by temperature including dry and cold temperatures

Ways to prevent cracked heel:

If you have cracked heels, there's a probability you might not have to visit the hospital. Cracked heels can be treated at home except for cases caused by medical conditions.

Ointment: Ointments work for most people with cracked heels. They are affordable and a hassle-free way to get rid of broken skin.

Coconut oil: Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that can make your cracked heels go. It reduces inflammation, helps to soften the skin, and retains moisture.

You can also use any of the following home remedies to cure cracked heels:

     Shea butter

     Olive or vegetable oil

     Mashed bananas

     Oatmeal mixed with oil

If your cracked heel is caused by any medical condition, it is advised you seek medical attention and see a doctor.
