What causes back pain in office chair?

by RC Modular Passionate about revolutionizing your living space

Medical professionals agree that an uncomfortable office chair is one of the main causes of back pain. It can lead to poor posture that places additional strain on the spine and lumbosacral discs.

Sitting in a slumped position for long periods of time puts pressure on the spine and cartilage pads (spinal disks) that cushion the vertebrae. This can lead to back pain, slouch, and even herniated discs over time.

1- Poor Posture

Sitting in an office chair for eight hours a day isn’t the easiest on your back. This static position can lead to a slouched posture, which puts pressure on spinal ligaments and stresses the cartilage pads (spinal discs) between vertebrae.

Sitting in a bad posture can lead to back and spine problems like muscle strains and herniated discs. To avoid these issues, sit up straight and align your spine using your office chair. Also, take half-hour breaks to stretch or walk around and prevent stiffness.

Using ergonomic “props” like footrests and adjustable seat & lumbar support can also help minimize the stress on your back. These devices help take the pressure off of spinal ligaments and joints, as well as improve blood flow that carries essential nutrients to spinal structures. In fact, studies show that these supports reduce low back pain and improve spine health. In addition, they can also reduce fatigue and increase concentration.

2- Poor Ergonomics

Sitting for a long time in an office chair without moving can hurt your back or worsen existing problems. It happens because sitting, especially in an office chair, makes your body stay still and puts more pressure on your back muscles, arms, legs, and spinal discs.

Taking breaks and staying active daily are essential to prevent back pain. Walking around helps stretch your back and neck muscles, reducing pain. Using a standing desk or ergonomic office chair instead of a regular one can also provide better support for your back while you work.

If you slouch in your chair you are putting pressure on the ligaments of your spine and ruining its natural curve. This can lead to a hunchback or permanent back pain in some cases. This is an ergonomic issue that can be easily fixed by adjusting your chair or using a lumbar support pillow.

3- Not Enough Support

Long periods of time sitting in the same position can lead to back problems and muscle strain. Maintaining good posture in a chair is important to help prevent this. It is also important to stand, stretch and walk for at least a minute or two every half hour to reduce back pain and fatigue.

A good office chair should support your back to keep your spine healthy. To check this, sit with your back against the chair and try to fit a clenched fist between your calves. If you can do this easily, your back is supported correctly. Add lumbar support (a pillow, rolled towel, or unique cushion) or adjust the seat height. Using a standing desk is also a good idea for a more active workstation that can prevent back pain.

4- Uncomfortable Seat

While ergonomic office furniture can prevent back pain, maintaining an ideal posture while sitting is equally important. Slouching or hunching forward strains the muscles, ligaments, and discs of your spine and adds more pressure to spinal nerves.

Slouching or hunching in an office chair is terrible because it stresses the back, shoulders, arms, legs, and spine extra stress. It can cause back pain or make existing back problems worse.

The office chair needs enough padding and should be comfortable for all-day sitting. It should support the natural curve of your spine and reduce tension. It should also swivel so you can reach the computer easily. The armrest should be near the desk and support your elbows comfortably.
