What are the Various Methods Used for Purifying Water?

by Water Purifier Anjan Sengupta (Service Head)

Nowadays, it has become important for us to know that our water is purified or treated before consumption. If your drinking water is contaminated and you don’t have bottled water, then there are various purification methods that can be used. Each of these methods has its merits and demerits. Filtration is good for basic water tasks such as sediment and chlorine removal, but in the long run, and considering the current environment situation, reverse osmosis is the best option. RO Water purifier requires a lot less energy and time when compared with other systems.

Here are the other types of water purification methods that you can consider:

1.  Boiling

Boiling water for consumption is known as the cheapest as well as the safest method of water purification. Water sources and or channels of distribution can make your water unsafe for drinking. For example, parasites and germs are things that you might not see in your bare eyes, but they can be life-threatening.

In this method, clean water must be boiled and left at rolling-boil for 1-3 minutes. It is recommended for people living in high altitude areas to boil the water longer than water boiled at lower altitude areas. Boiled water must be left to cool before drinking.

2.  Water Purifier

An electric water purifier has become the most trusted form of water purification method these days, and it can be found in most houses. A water purifier uses multi-stage processes like UV, UF, carbon block, and other modern water filtration technologies that can help to eliminate the majority of the chemicals and impurities, making the water pure for drinking.

3.  Reverse Osmosis

An RO purifier has time and again proved to be the best water filter to clean impurities from drinking water. Reverse Osmosis forces the water through a semipermeable membrane to remove all the contaminants. The TDS Controller and Mineralizer Technology present in these filters can help retain the necessary nutrients while eliminating all the harmful impurities.

4.  Chlorination

Chlorine is known as a powerful chemical that has been used for many years to treat water for home consumption. Chlorine is also an effective water purification method that can kill germs, parasites, and other disease-causing organisms found in the ground or tap water. Water is then purified using chlorine tablets or liquid chlorine. Chlorine is an off-the-shelf water purification product that is also cheap & effective. However, proper precautions must be taken when using chlorine liquid or tablets to treat water.

5.  Distillation

Distillation is a type of water purification method that utilizes heat to collect pure water after condensation of vapor. This method is effective because scientifically, water has a lower boiling point than the contaminants and other disease-causing elements found in the water. Water is subjected to a heat source until it reaches a particular boiling point. It is then left at the boiling point until it vaporizes. The vapor is then directed into a condenser to cool. Upon cooling, the vapor is then reversed into liquid water that is clean and safe for drinking. Other substances, which have a higher boiling point, are then left as sediments in the container. This method is effective in removing bacteria, germs, salts, and other heavy metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic.

6.  UV Radiation

In this process, the untreated water is exposed to UV Light which then kills microorganisms, preventing them from breeding further. But, if UV Radiation is not paired with an RO filter, then alone, it cannot remove impurities and heavy metals.

7.  Desalination

Desalination is used when water with a certain level of salinity needs to be filtered. This process can help in removing salt content, but it also eliminates essential minerals. However, desalination is not considered as safe and effective as modern water purification methods.

Water purifiers are important for every home. A UV RO Water Purifier is the most effective of all purifiers. With an increase in deadly diseases, it has become imperative for you to invest in the best water filter that ensures clean water for consumption.
