What are the important elements in Subtitle Translation?

by Sheron M. Author

Subtitle translation is technical and intricate. It is the process of translating the content of video through the written language. Translating video is complex. Therefore, only a few linguists with strong command over the language can complete this task. Precision and an eye for detail are must to ensure that the video is translated efficiently.

International translation work requires specialized translators with work experience across various genres. Getting structurally sound subtitle translation is a herculean task. Reference to context, knowledge about the domain and video synchronization are the basic requisites.

Here are some vital elements that one must consider for subtitle translation

  • Understand the type of translation: The content is important. Make sure you understand the crust of the content and the original tone of the video before commencing the subtitle translation. If your content is formal, hold the form of the content throughout the International Translation. The interpretation of the source file and text must be precise.

  • The natural expression: The video or caption may contain some native or original expressions that are important from the content point of view. Comprehend the purpose and need of the expression. Try to find a suitable replacement for the expression without losing the essence of the content. The subtitle translation must reflect the style of the original content.

  • The tonality and mood: at times during subtitle translation, one tends to deviate from the topic and incorporate elements that do not match the mood/tone of the video/content. The tone of the content must be maintained across the video. It must relate to the spectators and deliver the intended information efficiently. It should generate interest in the audience and allure them to know more.

  • Don't create neologism:  As a subtitle translator, you can use any linguistic resources to convey the message. However, conventional metaphors and sayings must be handled trickily.   The conventional metaphors must be translated conventionally and metaphors must be reduced to the minimum. If the text has mainly informational content then, your subtitle translation should have appropriate equivalent keywords in it. Your subtitle international translation must sound, look and appear like an original work.

The bottom line

If you are an international brand or a small start-up hoping to make a long-lasting impact on the audience then, subtitle translation can give your video a distinct edge. It can play a major role in highlighting your brand and amplifying its reach.
