What are the criteria to foster a child in the UK?

by David Price Web Designer
In 2019, the Fostering Network published figures that showed over 8,500 foster families are needed across the UK in 2020. How do you know if you can help foster a child?

Fostering is about providing a secure and caring home for children and young people who are unable to live with their parents. As a foster carer, you could make an immeasurable difference to a child's life by offering them safety, stability, understanding and opportunities they would have otherwise missed.

With over 20 years experience, Swiis Foster Care, along with our sister company Swiis Foster Care Scotland, is regarded as one of the finest and largest family owned independent fostering agencies in the United Kingdom.

If you are considering being a foster carer, it is important that you have a spare bedroom for the child to stay in as they need their own space to themselves. It does not matter if you own or rent the property they would be living in.

You can be a foster carer and work, but be aware you need to have flexible working hours as carers need to be available to support the child or young person with school and other outings.

You can also be unemployed to apply to be a foster carer. As a Swiis foster carer you will receive a competitive fostering allowance paid weekly and directly into your bank account.

Although it helps to have experience caring for children before you start fostering, Swiis offer a wealth of training and support to make sure you will make an outstanding foster carer.

Swiis welcomes carers from all walks of life including:
  • Single people;
  • Couples (married and unmarried);
  • Same-sex couples;
  • Parents and non-parents;
  • And people over 65.
