What Are The Applications Of Xylene?

Mixed Xylene is a colourless and highly volatile liquid having a transparent structure formed with two methyls, CH3 which gets attached to the benzene ring C6H6. Based on the positions of the component of methyl present in a compound, Xylene can be broadly classified into three isomer groups, namely, Ortho, Meta, and Paraxylene. In terms of industry language, the three of these along with ethylbenzene is together called as mixed Xylene. Several manufacturers produce a good amount of mixed Xylene every year for use as a solvent or as the raw material of Paraxylene.

How mixed xylene is used?

It is widely used as a solvent for paints and pesticides. Apart from that, it is also used as a raw material of components like orthoxylene (Phthalic Anhydride), ethylbenzene (styrene monomer), paraxylene (terephthalic acid), and metaxylene (isophthalic acid).

Xylene is considered as the principal precursor for terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate. Both of these monomers are used in the production process of polyethylene terephthalate or PET. It is used in the manufacture of plastic bottles and various types of polyester clothing.

Around 98% of the production of Xylene is done for meeting to the needs of the industries. It is considered an important precursor of phthalic anhydride. In case the demand for isophthalic acid comes up, Xylene, which is rarely sought, is converted from o- to p- isomer.

Application of Xylene

Xylene is widely used as a solvent. In this field of application, the mixture of isomers is often referred to as xylene and xylol. As a solvent, it does contain small quantities of ethylbenzene. The mixture is colourless and sweet-smelling but is highly flammable.

Under the application of bringing a solvent, xylene is used in the field of printing, rubber, and even in leather industries. It is the prime component of ink, various types of rubber, and even adhesives.

For serving as a solvent for paints and varnishes, xylene often acts as a substitute to toluene in conditions where the drying process is comparatively slow it is usually used by the people who are 'conservators of art.’ Xylene helps them in solubility testing. Apart from these uses, it is also used as a cleaning agent for surfaces like steel, silicon, and circuits.

In the field of dentistry, xylene is commonly used for dissolving the guttapercha. It is a special material which is used for endodontics or root canal related treatments. At the petroleum industry, it is used as a direct paraffin solvent.

It is also used to clear the tubes in case the tubing gets clogged due to paraffin wax. Due to this specialty of xylene as a cleaning agent, it is also used as an active ingredient in the products which are meant for cleaning ear wax.

Apart from all these fields, xylene is easily accessible in the market of wholesale mixed Xylene in Thailand. It is also used in laboratories for the preparation of baths using dry ice for the new reaction vessels. It is also used as a solvent for removing synthetic immersion oils from the objective of a microscope in case of light microscopy.
